Train UID Letter codes 06/02/2020 at 06:33 #123182

Hello all,

On making the Three Bridges engineering weekend timetable, including another one I'm doing, I've noticed different letters used for the trains UID which I assume has some form of meaning, and I think I've worked some out.

W, for example W26545, is a normal schedule? (Though diverted trains have this, though they would have been long term planned).
X, for example X66244, STP Schedule?
O, for example O24655, VSTP Schedule?
Y, for example Y77040, not sure what Y would be, only found these on Thameslink Horsham - London Bridge services.
G, for example G26545, not sure on this, seems to crop up on the odd pattern schedule, such as hourly Hove shuttles, most start with a W, the odd one starts with a G.

Or am I reading it all wrong and the letters mean something else?

Thank you,

James.

I believe they originated from the former train planning offices:
W - Wimbledon (Southern)
P - Plymouth (Western)
G - Glasgow (Scottish)
L/Y - London? (Eastern/Anglia?)
C - Crewe? (Midlands?)
However, as you say, these days G is used on the Hoves which ought to be Scotland, and numerous others don't fit the pattern any more. Back in the 2003 extract I can't spot any southern G UIDs, so perhaps the initial letter is not really meaningful anymore.

I can't help with STP/VSTP UIDs.

I would go along with L for London - mainly on TFL services atm. Y I assume would be York

From the recognised expert on train describer logic and other things , Peter Hicks of www.opentraintimes.com

Quote:
That was the case 'back in the day', it indicated the lead TPU, and a range of numbers indicated the different team (LTP and STP). But now it's all Milton Keynes, it's largely irrelevant. STPs may still get their own range of UIDs, but it's ceased to mean anything.

Also, VSTPs: a VSTP submitted for an STP schedule will have a numeric UID, Darwin will prefix it with an 'O' just to make it nice
But a VSTP submitted for a VAR or CAN schedule will have the UID of the schedule it's varying or cancelling

Those are not UID letters, but train headcode letters, which are documented in the relevant timetable era's planning rules document (current ones available under the Operational Rules (EAS-TPR) section here).

They are not headcode letters, headcodes on the Southern are numbers. They are train identity letters

Ben

Not necessarily just numbers on the Southern. Here is a train from my Lancing Winter 82/83 timetable that is nearly ready that has letters in the two character headcode.

6Y32 01:27 Three Bridges P.A.D - Salisbury Yard [4G] {33044 [HG]} {HG 132}
