Having to log in every day. 12/02/2020 at 10:38 #123255

On Monday morning of this week I had an 'episode' with my Dell Windows 10 laptop where neither my wireless mouse nor keybpard would work. To make matters worse the trackpad on the laptop also stopped working. Fortunately the laptop keyboard still worked and I had a wired mouse to hand so got around the problem. Anyway, the issue has now resolved itself, although I don't know what caused it in the first place. Windows then decided to perform an update.

The problem that I now have is that every morning when I boot up the computer I have to log in to SimSig. I never had to do this before, except very occasionally.

Does anybody know what I can do rectify this so that I stay logged in for longer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Have you checked the Remember Me box?

Yes, I have checked the 'Remember me' box, but it doesn't make any difference.

What's the bet you are clearing your browser history including cookies?

I reckon it might be incognito mode.

I did clear my browser history, including cookies, but that was several days ago and I have logged in a couple of times since then.

Sorry Geoff, I'm not familiar with that term. And is there anything that I can do about it if that's what happened?

I seem to remember seeing a tick in the 'Remember me' box this morning, but to be certain I'll have to reboot and see what happens.
I'll let you know.

Just re-booted the computer and had to log in again. However, I noticed that the 'Remember me' box was unticked so have now ticked it. Hopefully that was the problem. We'll see tomorrow morning when I turn the computer on again.

Thanks

Well, it looks like it must have been my mistake, so Postal was right to ask this question, as making sure that the 'Remember me' box was ticked has done the trick.
Thanks to all those who made other helpful suggestions.

I check the Remember Me box, but I find that I have to log-in afresh after a month or so. Oddly, though, I see that the SimSigRememberMe cookie shows an expiry date of 31-12-9999. It must be some other cookie that sets the length of the RememberMe function.

The cookie you're after is the ".AspNet.ApplicationCookie" and it's a known issue that was supposed to be fixed a little while ago, but apparently the fix isn't working as expected.

Not relevant now, but for the sake of answering: it's a mode most browsers support which typically prevents cookies being stored and deletes your browsing history at the end of a session, amongst other things. Typically used for preventing others from knowing which [cough] websites you might have visited but is not foolproof, and does next to nothing to prevent the website itself from tracking you.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll bear that in mind.

I think it is called "Opening a Private Window" in some browsers.

I think it is called "Opening a Private Window" in some browsers.
Chrome also has a literal "Guest Mode", which is a feature separate from incognito window but acts in a similar way.

Jan - thanks. As far as I can see, my RememberMe cookie ought to expire tomorrow evening at 21:07. Let's see whether I am kicked out, and have to check the Remember Me box again tomorrow evening.
