HST magically stops from 119 MPH to 0 at Didcot Parkway 29/02/2020 at 16:54 #123502

Hi. I'm currently playing SwinDid with much pleasure. I have noticed the following several times now, so I was wondering what is happening. HST's from Reading, that need to stop at Didcot Parkway platform 1 that are on time are stopped at Didcot with red signal 931, as the ARS waits until the booked time to proceed. However, if a HST is late, the ARS already routes signal 931 to 941 etc, giving a green signal at 931. This all makes sense. However, when looking in the train list for the train and its speed, it is 122 MPH while it actually already occupies the track section of platform 1 (and I think it is then impossible to stop in time). I have attached a picture of this scenario. Just a few seconds later (no picture), it has come to a full stop at the platform, saving nearly 3 minutes. Not that I am complaining, it saves a lot of time and makes these trains leave Didcot on time, but I really do not believe a train can dead stop from 119 MPH to 0 in 1 second. I run SimSig 4.15.1 and the SwinDid summer 2005 v4.0 timetable. I'd love your thoughts on this.

On this point, about ten years ago I booked on for a late turn, and was instructed to drive an empty HST from Paddington to Swindon, with a Network Rail bod in the cab with me. They were doing various tests to see how much distance was required to stop an HST from 125mph, and they wanted a flat section of line. It had been determined that such a section existed between the 58 and 60 mileposts on the Down Main near Wantage Road.

So having arranged a clear run through Didcot on greens, I hammered it up to 125mph and at the exact moment we passed the 58 mile post, I slammed it into emergency. We stopped just past the 59 mile post, on a good rail with no WSP activity.

So I can indeed confirm that stopping an HST from 119mph to 0mph in the space of Didcot platform 1 is pretty impressive.

I recall that's been reported before but I don't think I ever worked out why.

I do recall the cl302 units on the LTS could stop pretty much within the length of a 12 car set if a driver realised he was missing a stop. Regular thing in the morning peak when I was supervisor at Barking... you could always tell, because you heard the Westinghouse dump the air as they threw it all in as they ran into the platform. Still took longer than one second though...

The Core Code doesn't allow SPADs, so no matter what speed a train is doing, it will always stop before a red signal. But in this case the train had a green signal, so that doesn't apply.

To investigate we could do with a saved game that starts perhaps two minutes earlier and that demonstrates the problem. Can someone provide that?

I've just run a test train - enter Reading, stop Didcot P1 and pass next location (whatever that was). Train entered platform TC at full speed, slowed down to around 90 mph and stopped dead.

James has just collated a MANTIS report and it looks like a phenomena found in a couple of Sims, though the facts are slightly different. #29440.
