Hope that you don't think that this is a stupid question but I'm going to ask it anyway. Shortly after 08:40 I had trouble getting 6B30 into Sandy Down Yard. I inadvertently sent it into the loop because I forgot to set the Hand Points to Reverse (as per the Manual). As a consequence, it straddled the points when it stopped as it was too long to fit. Re-ran from an earlier save and got it in by doing what I should have done in the first place i.e. set the Hand Points to Reverse. It’s now 09:25 and 6B30 wants to leave the sidings and head for Hitchen. As I’d set the Hand Points for it to get into the sidings, I thought it necessary to set them for the trains’ exit but this wasn’t the case. Are the points of a type where they don’t have to be set for a converging route? Just seems a bit odd although those 'in the know' might think otherwise. Bugsy Not sure if the core code acknowledges, but in real life certainly in times gone past it was considered fair game for hand points to be run through in the trailing direction. No locks fitted and only springs in effect holding them in place. In modern times the PWSM's (Permanent Way Section Manager's) tend to hold a different view and require all points to face correctly at all times. Thanks for your reply Paul. I can imagine that this practice was fairly widespread in sidings years ago Everything that you make will be useful - providing it's made of chocolate. Log in to reply |

In Bescot Yard there are (or were) point mechanisms of an American design that aren't trailable. There's a special note in the Sectional Appendix that they must always be set for trailing moves over them. Log in to reply |

Those American hand points are becoming more common now

There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway. Log in to reply |
