I know you can assign a .wav file to an event. I can't even find which one is for the phone ringing.
Is the software suppose to come with default .wav files assigned? If not why? Also once I assign a sound will it become the default for every scenario or do I have to set it up each time?
If you speed up the time it is easy to miss a call or other important messages.
Does anyone have a list of the notifications and what they mean?
It would be nice is there was a save generic setting.
Thanks.
Is there an easy way to find when someone replies to this question?

There are no sounds installed by default. You point the programme at your own.
Not sure as to why, but it’s been that way for ~ 20 years, and this is first time I’ve seen anyone ask that question!
Once you’ve set up sounds (and indeed almost all options) they are common across all sessions from that point - so no you shouldn’t need to set them up again unless you reinstall the programme for any reason.
The meaning of the various messages are covered in the relevant parts of the manual - see the documentation section of the website, there’s far too much to go into in one forum post.
Check back on the forum later? There isn’t, that I’m aware of a post notification/subscription on here.

I knew it was a few to many q's at once. Many newer software packages are coming with little to no understandable help. I complain because I did do technical training to engineers and they love show and tell:-)

There's actually not too many different message types, so I'll have a go at describing when they're supposed to occur. Not all sims follow these conventions the same way, which I think is at least partly related to date of introduction.

Trackside equipment failure: Obviously, this happens when the sim "takes notice of" a failed track circuit, signal lamp, or points. It's accompanied by a dialogue box by default, so it's hard to miss anyway, but it's entirely reasonable to assign a nice loud alarm bell to it. You can also have just the sound and turn off the dialogue box.

Train waiting at red signal: This triggers when a train first comes to a stand at a signal which it expects to pass, but is not showing a proceed aspect. Unlit signals also count here. An exception is when the berth position for the signal coincides with a scheduled stop for the train.

Train still waiting at red signal: This triggers when a train makes a Rule 55 telephone call, usually after 2 minutes of unscheduled (and sometimes even scheduled) waiting.

Wrong route set for train: This triggers when a train comes to a stand at a signal indicating that an incorrect route has been set, and makes a suitably annoyed phone call.

Train location report: This triggers on messages showing the arrival, departure, or passing of a train at a timing point. Put in a teletype sound here if you really want to.

General simulation message:
General tips and hints: There's no fixed pattern for when these show up - it's sim specific. Probably not worth assigning sounds to them.

General telephone message: This is the one that triggers repeatedly when the phone is ringing. Annoyingly, it also triggers once when you send the reply.

Train entering system: This triggers when a train first comes into existence within the sim. In most of the newer sims, the train won't actually show on the panel immediately, if it is approaching from a fringe box rather than entering from a yard. ARS might start taking notice of the train from this moment.

Train ready to start: The train crew or platform staff have pressed the TRTS button, indicating that the train will depart within a minute if given a proceed aspect. ARS will usually take notice of this if fitted. Large NX and IECC panels have a distinctive sound associated with TRTS; for older power and mechanical boxes, perhaps substitute a guard's whistle.

Train ready in siding: This message normally shows up when the train's entry point doesn't have a TD berth. Its purpose is to inform you which train has just shown up and where.

Warning of delayed train entering area: When a train just entering the sim is more than 10 minutes late, you get this notice pointing that out. It may also inform you of a "loss of power" in that train, which may explain its delay and promises more delay in your immediate future.

Various non-essential incident reports: This one appears to be disabled by default, and I have no idea what it controls in practice.

Train(s) finished joining/dividing: SimSig does support coupling and uncoupling. It usually takes a few minutes to complete.

Slot/release request: Some sims have slots to/from fringe boxes and yards, between panels in the same sim, and/or to release an electric token machine remotely. This message type is associated with all that.

Level crossing clear: An MCB or CCTV crossing requires manual confirmation that the crossing is clear of cars before signals can be cleared for trains. This message informs you that the barriers are down and the crossing therefore now requires this check. I think this may also be triggered in some sims to inform you that a train is approaching a crossing that you will need to lower.

TD berth occupation/change: This message triggers when a train enters certain specific TD berths, specified by the sim author. It is mostly relevant for sims which have trains spend several minutes approaching before showing up on the actual panel.

Multiplayer message: Related to the F10 conversation box.

Simulation specific #1-4: Basically what it says on the tin. But some of the above messages may instead appear here in earlier authored sims.

Block bell #1-4: I have assigned sounds to these in my copy, but I've never seen them actually used, even in sims which have an AB section. For example, North East Wales and North Wales Coast both use the "slot" sound for offering a train, and associate no other sounds with the process. Maybe there are sims which handle this differently, and I just don't have in my collection.

Point normalisation alarm: Occasionally there is a set of points which must be returned to the "normal" position after a train has cleared them. Some installations handle this automatically, others require intervention from the signalman. This message is triggered if he forgets.

Timetable choice made: Some timetables have "choices" embedded for variety. This message appears when such a choice is locked in, eg. selecting the day of the week.

ARS message/alarm: These messages appear only in ARS fitted sims. They are triggered whenever a train enters or leaves ARS-controlled state (eg. by being routed off the ARS preferred path), and when the train encounters a route that ARS cannot set automatically.

AFAIK only North East Scotland uses these.

If this information isn't already in the wiki it should be there; could you please do so?

Once it's there I'll try to find some time to check it against the core code. (Not saying any of it is wrong, but …)

Looking through the wiki, there is a listing of all the individual messages that might occur, but no description of the message types in the Options nor any discussion of sound, as far as I can see. So I'll see if I can find some time to work on that.
