In the attached, 6N03 is running very early and is booked to stop in the platform at York. Behind it is 6S37 which is slightly late, but has some recovery time to use. Hence I wanted to divert 6N03 (which is diesel hauled) via Selby so as to get it out of 6S37's way.

Originally it was timetabled via Temple Hirst Jn, Hambleton South, then Hambleton North; the revised timetable sends it via Temple Hirst Jn, Selby Canal Jn, Selby West Jn, and Hambleton East to Hambleton North. That arrangement validated, and I set the route accordingly.

However, when 6N03 reached Temple Hirst Jn, it called in with a very strange wrong-route message. The location it complains about not being able to reach is not the one that it offers to bypass, and the latter is the one it's routed towards anyway.

What is going on here?

I'm now seeing a very similar problem in the opposite direction, see attached screenshot collage and savefile.

This happened to two trains in succession, both with diesel traction available, after I attempted to divert them around a TC failure rather than talk them past two red signals. You can see that I've sent an electric train through on the main, since there is little alternative - it's currently in the process of examining the affected stretch of line.

Note that I have given the driver a modified timetable via Hambleton East, Selby West, and Selby Canal Junctions before Temple Hirst, instead of Hambleton South Jn - and this timetable validates. However, the driver is complaining that he can't reach Temple Hirst Jn, and continues to do so unless I tell him to "abandon timetable", let him get onto the North Curve, then give him the exact same timetable again. After that, he'll happily proceed as directed and reappear on the approach to Temple Hirst.

I seem to remember we did this successfully in a multiplayer game around a week ago, and that the timetable validator asked to remove one of the Selby locations at that time. Please validate your timetable after editing it because this diversion should indeed be possible.

There are three Selby locations in the sim: Selby itself, Selby Canal Jn, and Selby West Jn. These effectively form a triangular junction off-panel. The diversion route is via Selby Canal Jn and Selby West Jn, in that order northbound, and in reverse order southbound.

Experimenting a little, I find that Hambleton North and Hambleton East Jns are mandatory, as is Selby West Jn. Selby Canal Jn is inserted automatically between Selby West and Temple Hirst Jn, and this validates whether or not Selby Canal Jn is manually added or not. If you were to add Selby itself to the timetable, it would not validate, because that is not on a direct route.

The problem, as I noted above, is that I have a *fully validated* route entered into the train's timetable, but the train is refusing to take the route.

Have you tried manually inserting canal junction into the timetable?

Yes, and you should be able to see that I've done that in both of my screenshots from today.

The train has already stepped up past Hambleton North in your screenshot. If you step it back to Hambleton North, does it still do this?

1Y90 had been given the new timetable shortly after passing Colton Jn. At that point, it was still expecting Hambleton North Jn as the next waypoint.

I appreciate this doesn't solve the problem, but...

The train is shown as being formed of Class 801s. These have a single diesel engine for the purpose of clearing the line only, they wouldn't be sent onto a non-electrified line. For simulation purposes, they shouldn't have the diesel power type box ticked.

(FWIW I'm not sure LNER have that route knowledge anyway)

Nope, not sure passenger trains ever use the curve, and I don't think they'd sign Selby to York either (some might sign to Hull)

My only record is:

"Used in emergency for a Leeds - Doncaster route following a line blockage and points failure, Feb 2005. ECML set dragged."

Plus a few crankexes I suspect - but they don't count :-)

Sets diverting to avoid Hambleton normally run via knottingley, milford and church Fenton and 0D0x whatever it is nowadays, runs to maintain this route knowledge. I havent done it for a fair few years now. Last time was due to an emergency line block with 91s cancelled at Doncaster and York, with HSTs running via knottingley. Good rare bit of track to red pen.

Mantis 35335 - will be conditional on the appropriate Selby location(s) being in the schedule rather than a free divert because, as others have said, it's not something any driver can do.
