From RAIB The RAIB is carrying out an investigation into a near-miss event involving a freight train and two passenger trains at Carstairs, South Lanarkshire. This occurred at around 20:20 hrs on 22 December 2009 when the freight train, 4L81, the 19:21 hrs service from Coatbridge to Tilbury, passed two red signals in succession as it approached Carstairs on the Up Main line. The train passed through Carstairs station and came to a stand around two miles after it had started to brake. An initial review of the evidence suggests that the braking performance of the train was below that expected of a train of its type. As freight train 4L81 approached Carstairs, passenger train 1S17, the 13:00 hrs service from Kings Cross to Glasgow Central, was being routed across the Up Main line at the south end of the station. This passed clear of the junction less than two minutes before the arrival of the freight train. Actions by the signaller had averted the potential for a derailment or collision between freight train 4L81 and a second passenger train that was also approaching Carstairs, from the direction of Edinburgh. The weather at the time was poor, with heavy falling snow and freezing temperatures. The RAIB's preliminary examination has identified no evidence that the operation or condition of the railway signalling system contributed to the incident. The RAIB’s investigation is independent of any investigations by the safety authority. The RAIB will publish a report, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of its investigation. This report will be available on the RAIB website. Postal, I was trying to be as subtle as I could there....it was slightly confusing having two topics going for the same thread or vice versa....still he who never made a mistake never made anything and it would be a rather boring world As for geordieland. The word on the street is particulary scary in to the cause of the Stobart/Tesco Home Delivery to Carrbridge.Am I allowed to say with a shed load of allegedlies?
