Afternoon all,

I was wondering if anyone is able to (safely) go out and get some reference pictures of a class 185? I'm in the process of commissioning a model converted out of a pair of 350s, but we can't find decent information about the roof detail... So if anyone is able to safely get to a station footbridge and grab some photos I'd be incredibly grateful!

I've probably got some from various travels over the years; any livery preference?

EDIT: Google should turn up plenty as well?

I don't have any clear pictures from above, but looking at my own photos it becomes apparent that the object above the cab doors (an A/C unit?) is definitely not symmetric. The air inlet on the right side is small but the one on the left side is large.

First two pictures: between Northallerton and Eaglescliffe, 23 July 2014
3rd one: Newcastle station, 8th August 2014

Not sure if there were any major changes to the roof design with different liveries - if there were, then the modern livery is the one I'm after :-)

Unfortunately, Google has been unhelpful in the case of top-down pictures... most photographers take photos from the front or side - the roof isn't exactly a classic shot!

I do have a series of roof shots of Voyagers in my collection if you are interested, and some shots showing part of the roof of the class 66, 153, 390 and an IET, but not of any Desiro family stock (and the 185 appears to differ from the electric units.)

Thank for the offer... the 185 does seem to be very unique though, especially since the exhaust ports are in the roof instead of at carriage ends, so I'm not sure that would work - thanks all the same however

Thanks for explaining, I now see what's the problem with these units. Judging from the soot on the roofs, there is a cutout next one of the doors of each carriage containing the exhaust, and so far the best pictures in this thread show the non-exhaust side.

I took the liberty to edit one of my own pictures to point it out, is it correct that you're still in need of a detailed picture of this piece of the roof?

Thank you all! Hopefully they'll be sufficient, but we'll have to see... in the worst case scenario I'll hold off on the commission until things are a little safer, and I can make a trip down south to get the shots I need

I hope that you post a photo of the finished article whenever that may be

Well done whoever smuggled that one out of the People's Republic of Blackpool North.
