A friend writes:

I think at Exeter St. David's we saw signals on the platform with additional "up" and "down" lenses.

It's many years since I've been there. Can anyone suggest exactly what he's referring to?

He's possibly referring to OFF indicators on the platform? Or the route indicators associated with the signals reading towards Exeter Central?

I would strongly suspect that it's the "Off" indicators that are being referred to.

I think he knows OFF indicators well enough to not call them signals. What are the route indicators? Do you have pictures?

Standard theatre boxes on the platform starters-see first image on this page: https://foursquare.com/v/platform-1/4ee060f97ee56b0308e2c18c/photos

According to the plans I've got, none say UP or DN. the closest is UM and DM

Thanks; I'm sure he was referring to the theatre boxes on the starters.

Well on the first photo on Steamer's link I see them displaying UW and DW, presumably telling the driver whether the train is going to use the up or down Waterloo line on the incline to Central.

DM would then indicate that you're not going to Exeter Central at all but towards Newton Abbot. I see little use for an UM aspect.

DN and UP. Looks like painted signs though; probably either OFF or route indicators above.

[Edit] Just found some drivers' manuals - though this is for the signals and may or may not apply to the UP/DN mid-platform indicators:
RY - Riverside Yard
S - Shunt spur
NY - New Yard
[blank for Up Main]
DW - Down Waterloo
UW - Up Waterloo
DM - Down Main
Routing to the LOS on the Up Main behind E35 does not appear to be possible from platforms with route indicators.

If these were as stated by the OP "we saw signals on the platform" these would certainly be UP and DN mid platform RA indicators.

UW DW DM would. as others have stated, route indicators on E160 E260.

Correct, there is no route from Platforms 1 and 3 to the LOS to reverse behind E35. Cost cutting measures when the panel was put in.
