I'm not sure I quite like the new formatting of quotes in the forum, as the reduced font size seems somewhat borderline in terms of readability.

Apart from that matter of taste, there's also a definitive bug there, because with nested quotes the reduced font size is applied cumulatively to each nesting level, so inner quotes end up positively unreadable.

Nope, by design. Just goes to show you can't please all the people all the time (this and the shoutbox).

Well, personally I'm happy about the shout box change, because it speeds up browsing the forum on a phone (#31070, if you remember), but regarding the font size, yes…

Interestingly and curiously enough it's not as bad on my phone, possibly because that has a higher DPI display, so the smaller font doesn't impact readability as much. However as long as I'm the only one complaining here, I'm happy to work around it with a personal user style in my browser, so you don't have to change anything just for me.

I do find it a bit awkward to read, particularly where there are nested quotes.

Just out of interest, was the change by design as a result of what you felt was best, as a result of a small but vocal subset of users or as a result of a significant groundswell of opinion? (Nailing the flag to the mast, I personally find it a retrograde step).
Quotes being a smaller font is nice, but the nesting makes it very annoying to still be useful. It'd be better if it for example was collapsed by default. This can also be useful when posting other long stretches of text, for example CSS styles.

I now keep a magnifying glass on my desk. If the font gets too small to read even with that, I have found that if I copy the "nested" quotes into a Word document, I can read it more easily and enlarge the font if necessary.
That might seem to be a bit long-winded to some people though.

You can enlarge the SimSig website as a whole by holding the Ctrl key and scrolling up. Then you can press Ctrl-0 to return it to normal.

This should alleviate the need for a magnifying glass.

Ah. I shall try that. Thanks for the tip.
