It was slightly before I started in the Control (May 1989) but the entire Class 155 fleet was temporarily withdrawn due to persistent doors opening in traffic incidents. A colleague who started a few months before me had his first shift that day and recalls the poor Provincial Controller being surrounded by all the Reggie Rail bigwigs who probably, as tended to happen, couldn't quite grasp the concept of you can't run a train service, if you don't have any trains... Though to be fair, there was a fair bit of innovation and improvisation to at least keep something running - obviously the 156's arrived (eventually) to keep things going, a bit of loco and stock working plus conventional DMU's probably purloined off the Cardiff Valleys to maintain a service. We used to pride ourselves on the Resource Control desks that cancellation was the last option.

I think you underestimate the lengths Yorkshireman will go to get cheaper ticket!

A friend and I on an All Line Rover slept on the floor of a BG from Newcastle to Kings Cross sleeper only train (hauled by a Deltic (#10 without checking) hence the desperation).

If it was in relation to the same incident then I believe Northern Rail (or whatever it was at the time) lent some EMUs too (what type I don't recall).

And today GWR say that Cross Country are working the Bristol TM to Swindon shuttles to connect with Newport to Reading GWR services!

Apart from the 317's already mentioned, GNER was loaned 321/9's to help cover.

317315+317319 operated between PBO & YRK on 19/06/98 following the de-railment at Sandy.

I was a DMU Controller at Derby in the 80s when the first second generation DMUs Class 150/1 were introduced.

They were claimed by BREL York to be "maintenance free" and we needed an availability of 96% for service. For the first three months the availability never got above 60% for a variety of reasons. Leaking roof tanks, couplers falling apart, various engine defects including oil in coolant and vv. But the fun really started one Sunday night, shortly after we were silly enough to think we had weathered the worst of it when one set derailed on an EDMU move from Wrexham to Chester DMUD at Saltney Junction.

This happened when I was on duty at around 2100 Sunday and by 2300 the whole fleet was grounded. The re-railers found that the front left hand wheel had fallen off due to stress fractures. Some were allowed to make OJO in passenger service to Etches Park, but how we cobbled a service together for the next month I'll never know to this day.

For a while they could run with stress relieving holes drilled into the wheel web and all had to be ultrasonically examined every three days. Just how we kept a service running across the East and West Midlands, the Cambrian Coast and the Chester area is still beyond me.

We borrowed sets from Newton Heath, Chester, Tyseley and Lincoln and even pressed our very tired and recently retired Class 120s and Class 114s back into service.

It was a nightmare.

I loved my job but after a shift we all had to go and lie down in a darkened room with a paracetamol sandwich.

Then, by the late 80s, just when availability was getting close to 90% they sent them to Tyseley and we got new 156s to replace them...and the nightmare started again.

Don't talk to me about British engineering.

Some of these stories on here are quite eye opening and brilliant!

Update on the current (11/05) situation;

Cross country are running shuttles from Bristol to Swindon using Voyagers and (ironicly) a HST!

GWR are running hourly Swindon to Paddington using 12 car 387s. 3 of which have come across from c2c today via Wembley.

ROG worked 5 Mk3s to Laira on Monday (10/05) also to help the situation.

LNER are bringing some of there Mk4s and 91s back early but on the Leeds Circuits.

Info so far is that majority of the failures have been in diesel fitted variants, hence why GWR has been hit so bad.

Apparently GWR are not having a good time.... so one of the three 'good' 800s had to be withdrawn yesterday....

....because it hit a deer.
