Hello,

Can I easily change the platform a train should arrive at (or depart from)?

Sometimes I would like to have an early arriving train waiting at a not-so-busy platform so that other trains can pass.

Yes, simply route the train into a different platform and it'll carry out any activities as usual.

There are, however, a number of things to consider:

*Will any delay be caused by simply waiting for the booked platform to become available? (Changing platforms inconveniences passengers, staff and, on older timetables, parcels. By all means change platforms if delay would ensue, but you shouldn't really let an early train into a platform if it can wait)
*Can the train, and any associated with it (divides, joins etc.) access their destinations from the new platform?
*Is the new platform long enough?

You can change the platform number shown in the timetable window by going to F2-> Right click train-> Timetable Options-> Edit Timetable and selecting the new platform. Permanent changes are made via the F4 timetable editor; you'll then need to save the timetable.

Thank you Steamer,

I will then try to route the train into a different platform. You say I can change the platform number in the timetable window (F2 menu). If I can just route the train into a new platform, why would I also consider changing it in the timetable window?

And how do I know if the platform is long enough?

In most cases, platform lengths can be found in the simulations manuals located here: https://www.SimSig.co.uk/Wiki/Show?page=simulations.
Some sims have platform lengths and loop lengths described on the panel.

You may consider changing platforms in the trains TT because some sims penalise you by sending a train into the wrong platform.

If I change the platform in F2-> Right click train-> Timetable Options-> Edit Timetable. Will that change the platform for this train "for ever" or just this session?

If done via F2, it will only affect the session you're currently on

Sometimes I would like to have an early arriving train waiting at a not-so-busy platform so that other trains can pass.

The signalman can certainly alter platforms and routings if he sees fit.

However, I’d say there should always be a reason for doing it. In the absence of a good reason then it’s generally the case that trains should be routed as per the timetable as far as possible.

In real life there’s an element of local custom and practice to this. In some locations platform changes will be quite common and not much of an issue, whilst in other places may cause issues for staff (or even passengers!).

A real example - in many of the King’s Cross modern timetables there’s one through service in the mid evening booked to run via Welwyn Garden City platform 1. I’m not sure of the exact reason, but it’s either to keep the signalling and platform equipment in working order and perhaps an element of route knowledge retention. In practice it essentially never happens. By contrast re-platforming at Finsbury Park between platforms 2 and 4 is nowadays frowned upon as it causes considerable inconvenience for passengers and staff. It still happens though!

I wouldn’t be minded to go altering platform allocations to accommodate an early service though, unless the early service was going to block other trains up - in which case the early service may well have been misregulated further back.

The reason for a platform change in my case is either because A train ahead has stopped, blocking the intended platform, or because I havenmessed something up and forgot a routing of a train to the correct platform.

If a platform change involves transfer over from Fast to Slow or the other way around, do I have tomchange this as well in the timetable to avoid a penalty?

No. Penalties are only applied if the train stops at a different platform than scheduled. So non-stop trains can be routed through any platform without a TT edit as well, without incurring a penalty.
Be careful though, some destinations may not be available from the FL/SL. For example the Hertford Loop from Stevenage P2.

You do not need to redo the line codes. if the sim is ARS (main reason for line codes) then as soon as you route the train off it changes to non-ARS (TD goes magenta not cyan).
You then have to route it until it gets back on path for the ARS to pick up.

There might be a case (for ease of SimSig) to amend a next working so that ARS will handle a later departure for you.

The penalty for a 'wrong' platform is higher than for a 'wrong but opposite' platform as you have given the punters less exercise.
The sim author sets up 'opposites' so may not apply to all sims. I suspect (confirm someone ?) that a large island with inset bays like Carlisle P1/2/4 could all be 'opposites' as could even a situation like Edinburgh 14-17.
