Carried out the update for North Kent & once completed, restarted PC made a few attempts to run SimSig but continually got the message "file access denied". So I deleted SimSig, rebooted win 11 and installed SimSig Setup V5_17_2b, which gave the problem seen in pic two. I eventually got it installed, inserted my user name & password & updated. I ended up with Version V5.19 but still received the "file access denied" message (pic 1). I looked online & saw there was a SimSig fonts file so thought I would give it a try however, before clicking save, I noticed it seemed to be saving the Cambridge sim (Pic 3) & was unsure if this was correct. Any ideas please, many thanks in advance.

There's definitely an issue with the button link to the font file, I've raised Mantis 35783 to get that resolved.

You shouldn't need to install the font file separately unless the loader specifically says you need to do so. If you needed to install the font file separately when you open the loader you would get a message "SimSig system files not installed. Please click "yes" below to visit http://www.SimSig.co.uk for troubleshooting tips." As that's not happened I think we can rule that out.

Error 740 is a Windows error that basically mean it wants you to have administrator rights to run the application. Now I don't know why it's suddenly asking for that, but if you go to C:\Program Files (x86)\SimSig\SimSigLoader.exe and right click and run as administrator do you still get the same issue?

I have tried many a time to install and update to V5.19 but always got the file access denied outcome. I have since installed SimSig V5.17.2 and rejected updating and then installed each sim separately from within the start a new sim page & this seems to have worked & I can now run sims. Its only if I upgrade to V5.19 the the problem exists,I hope this helps.

Did you get the windows pop up window asking for permission for SimSig to to change your PC ???

I had to allow it even tho I have admin rights - updated to 5.19 without issues

Yes as I mentioned I got it working on version V5.17.2, but have now clicked on update & got the message shown in the first picture & clicked Yes, but note, the sim is already running with administrative rights so why its asking, I'm not sure. It installed the update to V5.19 but on starting the program I got the file error message. I will delete & reinstall again in the way I mentioned above which includes the new Kent sim & leave it at that. Thanks

Your account has admin rights, but on modern versions of Windows this just means that you don't need to type an admin's password to do the update. You still need to give permission.

What we have here could be a Windows 11 issue.

Could it be a Controlled Folder Access issue in the Ransomware Protection section of the Windows Security settings. I am still using W10 and have to add the SimSig loader as a new allowed app if I am running a beta version of the loader. This is because I rename with the version number included rather than plain vanilla SimSigLoader.exe which makes the system think it is new potential threat. Could W11 be reading things like version numbers automatically and thinking it is again a new potential threat?

John, once you install version 5.19 via the updater, if you go to C:\Program Files (x86)\SimSig\SimSigLoader.exe and right click and run as administrator do you still get the same issue with file access denied coming up?

Unfortunately leaving 5.17.2 and installing all the simulations manually probably isn't a fix in the long term for you as each time you update you'll run into the same issue I suspect.

I'm not ruling out Controlled Folder Access as being the problem, but the fact John isn't getting a warning message about missing the font file despite uninstalling and reinstalling SimSig points me elsewhere at the moment.

I have tried to run V5.19 from the .exe file within Program File (x86) with run as administrator but unfortunately get the same problem. I have decided to await the next win11 update & see if it solves the problem, Thanks.

Thanks John that's useful.

If you wouldn't mind indulging me a little more to see if I can bottom out what's going on.

Is controlled folder access turned on?

1) Type Windows security into the search bar
2) Click Virus and threat protection
3) Scroll down and click Manage ransomware protection
4) It should tell you on that page if Controlled folder access is on or off.

What version of Windows 11 are you running?

Select Start > Settings > System > About. Open About settings. You should be able to copy your Windows specifications and Device specifications using the Copy button.

Thanks in advance

Solved the problem by allowing the SimSig loader app through the controlled folder access (all new to me). Thank you all, for steering me in the right direction, a job well done as always.
