Hello,

Asking the question out of curiosity (as opposed to an attempt of pointing out a possible flaw) - When chaining between Leamington Spa & Fenny Compton and Marylebone, any train coming from Fenny Compton into Banbury loses its interposing data when it enters the area.

Is this reflective of real life? That is my current thought process - That, the interposing data is lost due to a lack of train describing equipment between the two boxes in real life? Or perhaps it's due to the mismatch of eras (LS&FC being 2006 and Marylebone being 2016)?

Curiosity is killing the cat. Anyone know? Thanks!

Marylebone 2016 represents the boxes at Banbury having closed, and the area formally controlled by the Banbury boxes moving to the Cherwell Valley desk in WMSC.

Leamington 2006 represents Fenny Compton having shut, and the simulation area all being controlled by Leamington Spa Westcad.

The Cherwell Valley desk in WMSC was an amalgamation between Leamington Spa Westcad, and the resignalled Banbury area.

For the moment the Leamington (2006 era) will only chain with Marylebone (2013 OR 2015).

I have vague intentions to add a 2016 era to Leamington, but that's further complicated by the boundaries to both Saltley and Coventry having changed, and it's not anywhere near the top of my list.

Fair enough. And thank you for your quick response.

Could either or both of the manuals be updated to clarify that fact then? It is what is at this point, but both manuals seem to indicate as long as LS&FC is in 2006 mode, the two will chain harmoniously.

Oh well...It appears my two solutions at this point: 1) Rewrite the Marylebone timetable to be compatible with 2015 era; 2) Manually interpose trains as they transfer between boxes.

That's not an unreasonable request at all, both manuals have been updated to reflect the situation.

I quite like your second idea, for ultra realism when chained the Leamington signaller would need to phone the Banbury signaller for each and every train

Would they not have been described by block bell?

Depends on the era to an extent. When Fenny Compton was the blocking point, then yes they would've used AB rules/block bells to Banbury North. When Fenny was abolished, Leamington would not have used block bells to Banbury North or in reverse either. Banbury North had a describer but still had to manually log arrivals at Banbury from Leamington. Additionally Banbury North to Banbury South was block bells with routing codes too, with the train describer being applicable from Aynho Junction after that box was abolished.

Banbury South used to interpose with the train in Banbury Station at BS2 signal and the description stepped from there.

Thanks. I wasn't sure quite what was provided after Fenny Compton was abolished. (My partner's nephew was at Fenny for a time, then went to Banbury South, but I never saw the North.) I would certainly expect Banbury North to have to keep a book, probably recording description sent on the down and description received on the up (arrival time on the up would be catered for by TES to the South, I'd have thought).

So the working would be as for a describer failure. Keep the bobbies on their toes :-)

Banbury North recorded the times all bell signals were sent and received to/from the South Box and the times train descriptions were sent and received to/from Leamington Spa.

Banbury South was eventually exempted from the requirements to record times due to workload. It did however record 2-3-3 and 5-2 which were authorised to be used between Banbury North and South for bang road shunting movements from either end of the station to the other:
