A suggestion maybe to add into the timetable editor & sim if it worked
If a train terminates at Rainford from the Wallgate direction they would move forward to reverse at Rainford RJ2 Signal to get to the correct platform for the next service. From 18th July to 26th August 2022 no trains will be running between Rainford & Kirkby due to engineering works, so all trains start/terminate at Rainford. Could adding in Rainford RJ2 Reverse into the sim/timetable editor work without having to obtain the token for OTW? I'm not fully sure if the reversal are done locally with the siganller so a token isn't otained.

Hi,

Way back in the late 80s when faced with this situation the signaller used to oversee the operation without withdrawing the staff.

That could be the situation for today then I guess, only information I got was suggesting no token is obtain for the reversal which seems right?. I often travel the route mainly to Upholland. But the odd occasion through to Kirkby then onto Kirkdale/Sandhills.

My suggestion would be to add it in as Rainford Signal RJ2 Rev into the Sim/Timetable editor to allow flexibility

Id be surprised if Rainfords starter isn't locked by the token machine nowadays 1 withdrawal, 1 pull. If that's the case the arrangements will be interesting because it will be the protecting signal for a T3 on the single line, but would need to be passed in order to turnback. The token would be in the possession of the PICOP. Seems to be an interesting situation.

If that's the case surely it should be pilot working to/from the point of obstruction and the token would not be used as protection.

Indeed it is a situation that seems a little odd. Without actually knowing where the work is been taken place I would of thought the token would taken under possession. I would presume it's local, but I trying to refer back to the Merseyrail derailment at Kirkby. All Northern services terminated and started at Rainford until the line was clear to be opened for traffic.

Here is situation at Rainford from 18th July to 26th August 2022, trains terminating and starting.

In that particular case, I imagine the token was available to the signalman. Several freight trains can be seen entering and leaving the single line during the period covered by the link, but they don't go all the way to Kirkby, instead coming off at a ground frame part-way there.

According to RTT, the RHTT goes all the way to Kirkby. I wonder if the freight side hasn't been updated as of yet.

I suspect the RHTT would be informed on the day about needing to stop short of Kirkby station, possibly at the Knowsley ground frame, and reverse there. After all, if there are no trains able to go all the way to Kirkby, there's no need for the RHTT to do so either.

Point is, if the token is available (as it should be, given that the derailment was on the Merseyrail side of the buffers), then normal working as far as Knowsley is available, and the signalman would be able to release any interlocking for a shunt move in the normal way.

RHTT won't be running as out of season. As for the Knowsley Binliner trains I've yet to receive any info for these. But I have been informed that the section of line been closed is from the Ground Frame to Kirkby Station for track and draining works.

Reversal behind Rainford Signal RJ2 will need the token for the reversal. Could Rainford RJ2 Reverse be added to the Simulation Locations/Timetable Editor and also to Mantis for the next Wigan Wallgate update please?

Now that I’ve found out the engineering works on the section between Rainford and Kirkby is to do with a new station been built. Headbolt Lane meaning now trains running on the single line between Mon 18th July to Mon 29th August 2022.

As for the operations at Rainford, it will be local operations to reverse trains behind RJ2. This would make a good opportunity for timetable developers.

I've added Mantis 36182 to look at adding a reversing point behind RJ2.

I'm not entirely sure what "As for the operations at Rainford, it will be local operations to reverse trains behind RJ2. " Whatever is done you'll still need to release the token to allow the train onto the single line in the simulation, as I don't fancy attempting to simulate working to or from the point of obstruction on a single line
