Looking at some photos from Tondu signal box, I notice the phone concentrator has a label for “Maesteg Token Hut”. On the ground there are three cabinets in the undergrowth near the buffer stops.

Is there still a token instrument at Maesteg? Presumably it would now serve no purpose as there doesn’t appear to be any way anything could be locked in there. Something left over from the past which hasn’t been fully recovered?

I recently took a train from Maesteg to Cardiff and didn't see any sign of a "token hut" so I can only think that this stem from the days when the line ran beyond Maesteg (Castle Street - not the site of the present station which was located just next to the Asda store and of which the footbridge survives) to Cymmer, Glyncorrwg and North Rhondda. The railway station at Maesteg (Castle Street) closed 1970 but colliery trains continued until November 1985. It could well be that this "token hut" plate was never removed in 1985.

Tokens are still required for Tondu - Maesteg but the train driver returns them to the signalman at Tondu when (s)he heads back towards Bridgend.
