Interesting. I’ve just sent 5Y32 from Newcastle P3 (as per its timetable), across the High-Level Bridge, through Greensfield Jn, KEB East Jn and KEB North Jn and back into P3.

Am I missing something here because this manoeuvre appears to be pointless. No other trains are due to use P3 and it isn't scheduled to stop en route.

Track knowledge refresher so that the driver can sign for a diversionary route that is occasionally used?

Quite possible: that gives you both the High Level Bridge diversion for ECML workings and the KEB diversion for trains via Sunderland.

Or it could be a rusty rail working.

What date of timetable ?
I do not see it in the sim provided default 15-10-2009.

Could be to get out of the way of a freight or similar that did not run on the day in question.

The timetable is August 2016 with Extras.

Nothing obvious in the relevant WTTs (available for all on the NR archive site), would favour route knowledge for a London crew.

If it was a route knowledge working then I guess it would be for contingency rather than timetabled moves. Apart from things like track defects causing the timetabled route to be blocked I have been on trains in both directions between London and Newcastle which have used the High Level in order to turn the set and get it back to posh end at the KGX buffers formation.
