Owing to various delays a freight train and my inability to control things properly in the Doncaster South sim I'm playing, a train made un unscheduled stop in Newark station. In real life I know that the doors on the trains are locked so any passengers waiting on the platform wouldn't be able to board a train. Would a signaller looking at the information on his screen be able to anticipate this situation and perhaps hold the train at a signal before the station? Everything that you make will be useful - providing it's made of chocolate. Log in to reply |

Simply coming to a stand in a station following signals isn't considered an unscheduled stop and there is no reason to mitigate against it (it's frequent on 13b/14b at Piccadilly when following another train, and also at Ashburys waiting for the signal to clear to Reddish, and Ardwick awaiting MP315). As you say, it's only an issue if doors are released - or possibly if a train stops on greens when not scheduled to as it could hold up other services.
There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway. Log in to reply |

More of a problem with slam door trains with no central door locking. On the routes I signed out of Liverpool Street you could be booked non stop to Shenfield or Colchester after Liverpool Street or Stratford, if you were routed on the Electric Line (used by the inner suburban Liverpool Street-Gidea Park-Shenfield-Southend Victoria stopping and semi-fast services) rather than the booked Main Line Drivers would usually slow to a stand before a station platform if a signal was red at the end of the platform to avoid passengers attempting to board the train. if stopping was unavoidable as a Guard you would ensure that you made announcements about where your next stop was advising people not to alight and trying to stop people boarding, when the signal cleared you had to treat the situation just like a normal station stop with the train not moving until the ready to start indication had been given and acknowledged. when working a sliding door train I would also still give the ready to start bell signal having done the normal prior to departure platform check even though I would not normally have released the doors.

We had an instruction when working our "Classic" i.e slam door hsts before they were refurbed, that if stopped at a station that we were not booked to call at, we (The guard) would have to ensure the PTI was clear, signal was off and then buzz the driver away. Again, only slam door stock even with CDL. Power operated door vehicles were not included in this instruction.

Drivers in Sydney (and probably elsewhere) are taught to stop short of a platform when they aren't booked there and don't have the road out the other end of the platform. There are a couple of prescribed locations where they have to come all the way onto the platform, but will mostly hang right back until they can see some colour at the other end - avoids the punters thinking they have an extra train. Wonder if I should put in a feature request for that in SimSig haha Log in to reply |
