New Street Stopping Positions 20/02/2023 at 11:49 #150576

Hi all,

What would be the most realistic way of enforcing stopping positions on New Street?

The situations I'm thinking of are when an arriving/terminating train is too long for the A/B end (for instance, an 8car in 3A from London, or a 4car in 5B from Shrewsbury), so the route is given through the platform, but this causes the train to go all the way to the end of the platform. Would an N stopping position suffice in this case or is it more of a complex issue?

Thanks.

My memory from some time ago is that drivers are supposed to draw down as far as the signals allow, if operationally sensible. For example, a single EMU booked in the near end but receiving a double yellow before the station should instead proceed past the mid-platform signal towards the far end. I'm sure there are plenty of reasons why a train would not do this though.

Near end (without exact) will ensure the train will not register arriving until the tail end is entirely within a platform, including waiting for a signal to show proceed if necessary to get that rear end to fit.

Side note: One thing to watch with NX or FX (exact) is that the platforms are all different lengths at New Street. Planning to stop X meters from the end of one platform might not work so well if the signaller routes to another platform with different lengths.

Thanks for the insight, Geoff.

Sectional Appendix:

Quote:
Stopping Positions
Drivers of arriving trains approaching a yellow aspect displayed in the mid platform signal should bring their train to a stand at the
inner platform signal (where provided) in line with their companies professional driving policy, if this signal also shows a proceed
aspect then the train should continue to the platform end starting signal, stopping in accordance with their companies
professional driving policy. This does not apply if the Person In Charge Of Train Dispatch displays a hand signal to stop the train
short along the platform or a train operator specific stop car marker / stopping point is provided
