Couldn't find any info on this but wanted to know what is the longest distance a train has traveled through Simsig. That is what real world train has traveled the furthest entirely within the bounds of Simsigs available scheduled or otherwise? If withdrawn sims are included, then the Penzance to Aberdeen XC service is a good contender, running through Cornwall, Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol, Gloucester, Saltley, New Street, Saltley again, Derby, Trent, Sheffield, Leeds Ardsley, Leeds E&W, York, Newcastle and running out of simmable track at Morpeth. according to TRUST, the mileage to Morpeth is 570 miles.

The northbound cross country workings to Aberdeen have started from various west country stations (Plymouth, Exeter, Newton Abbot, Paignton, Bristol) but never any further west than Plymouth. with the use of the NLL (now withdrawn) you could do some lengthy routes with the freight flows between the south-east/east and Northwest and with the in-dev Doncaster Stn you can do the buffers at KX to the fringe with Morpeth, quite a considerable distance, especially if you travel via Leeds! That would of course be a WCML / Carstairs train, not ECML. Other odd destination combinations did appear with engineering delays, so there has been a Penzance - Aberdeen, and even an Aberdeen - Harwich. Not in GBTT / WTT of course. To be fair the service I looked at was to Edinburgh although I'm sure historically there was a Penzance- Aberdeen going way back. I had a look to check the mileage. If we're considering in development sims, but not withdrawn sims then you could do the same journey, but running from Bristol to Swindon, didcot, Oxford, banbury, Leamington then Saltley, regaining path at New street? I'll throw into the hat the Brighton - Manchester service, although now long since gone, the sims involved would be Three bridges then the WCML finishing up at Manc Piccadilly. I believe it went via Kensington and joined the WCML at Acton. Si Log in to reply |

You can do London Euston - Holyhead at 262 miles all within the confines of SimSig with currently released simulations.

It doesn't have to be passenger service right? 6M77/6V01 the Earles Sdgs - Cwmbargoed is a good contender if so? runs Valleys - Cardiff - Newport - Hereford - Shrewsbury - Crewe - Man South - Stockport - Man East - Peak District. Which then itself does start up a chain with the new Sheffield sim, albeit sim trains only work going towards Worksop and not in the other direction (never mind nothing long distance would be timetabled through that way for this threads actual question). In my day the route was Kensington - North Pole Junction - Old Oak thence down the GW. I don't recall a Brighton-Manchester changing engines at the Mitre when I relieved at North Pole (mid-1979 - early 1980) but I suppose it might have happened later on (when I was on the West London the Brighton-Manchester was being hailed as a brand-new initiative). Everybody's mentioning passenger trains, but what about freight trains such as the Burngullow to Irvine silver bullets. IIRC that was the longest[distance wise] freight service running on the BR network. Running via Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol, Severn Tunnel, then right at Maindee East Jn, via The Marches to Crewe & then north via the WCML to Scotland worked by a pair of Cl.37/5 locos throughout. Most of which is covered by a sim. Passenger wise although it's not all covered on sims be 'The European' which originated at Harwich Parkeston Quay to Glasgow Central. This train used to run across country from Harwich, Ipswich, Stowmarket, Ely, March, Peterborough, Grantham, Nottingham, Alfreton & Mansfield Parkway, Chesterfield, Sheffield[loco change SF Cl.47/4 off & another one on], Stockport, Manc'r Piccadilly, Manc'r Oxford Road, Bolton Preston[loco change diesel off/AC eletric on] & the via the wcml to Glasgow Central. It ran as 1S85 07.17 Harwich Parkeston Quay to Glasgow Central & the return went via the same route in return & ran as 1E87. Then later in 1989 it was sent from Harwich up the GE to Channelsea Curve Jn over the NLL & then ran via the WCML all the way to Glasgow Central. Also for a short time this train was worked by a diesel dragging the AC electric DIT over the NLL.

I did look in one WTT I have but did not find anything long distance via Leeds in the oil trains from west Wales. Without a Preston sim, Holyhead is further from Crewe. So the Herbrandston - Holyhead beats the Herbrandston - Polmadie as that falls off at Wigan. A passenger would be slightly longer anyway if running via Swansea station. I think longest run on current sims would be Llanelli (inc) - Newport - Shrewsbury - Stockport - Huddersfield - Leeds - Newcastle - Morpeth (ex). Was there ever a train that way ? Mails ?
