Afternoon, The Difference between the passenger and freight side is vast. When I worked in the south on the passenger I would say the spare coverage of traincrews was quite heavy to be fair at each depot you had booked "Spare" Turns and "Service Protection Turns" The Spare man if he no work after or was not given a job was often sent home after 5 or 6hrs the guy on the SPT Turn he was in for 10 out of an 11hr turn. That said if anyone rung in sick it was a doddle to cover the jobs. That said you had awkward men who didn't want to do out when "Spare" I had a full on row with 22:00hrs Spare man one night who thought he would be off in the small hours of the morning. When I said "Del Boy get yourself on the 22:30 to Banbury got a job to move a unit from Banbury to Aylesbury" I was told to F Ryte off I'm not doing that its a running turn. "No Del its a short notice move, get ya traps and check your T&C's and by the way the unit is on a Wheel Skate" To say he wasn't happy was an understatement. On the Freight Side when EWS formed from the buying the former BR Freight business Ed Burkhardt when negotiations started for Driver Restructuring he toured the country and saw "Spare" men sat at Depots and couldn't work out why they wasn't driving trains. Under the DRI initiative they was got rid off. The drivers hours became annualized and spare turns removed. There would be spare coverage built into the link of work but this would be to cover Annual Leave and such if a vacancy arose because of sickness then it would be a case of shuffling the pack so to speak the Train Crew Supervisors became great at this and they would merge 2 diagrams into one ask guys to extend on the job that they was on and the 1st point of call would be the rest day available men they would be rung and the carrot dangled. Made the job harder in a lot of respects but the expertise of the train crew supervisors was something to behold and was probably one of the biggest mistakes EWS made by getting rid of the grade and pushing it onto the control desk functions in 2007/8. Also a thing to go quite early on was the "Control Orders" Turns for us on the coal side of stuff these turns was a god send if your MGR sets had landed in the wrong locations over the weekend and they also helped out the loco control with moving locos around that again had ended up in the wrong places. We did fight a hard battle and managed to keep them in the Aire Valley, East Mids and South Yorkshire and North East as the company did take on board that it would be carnage if we didn't keep them and for a time at FLHH we had control orders turns. These turns could be all or nowt but non the less they was really really useful to have and at times saved the companies thousands. This was not just unique to EWS Freightliner Heavy Haul they didn't have spare turns they had "On Call" Turns so the driver say if he was 19:00hrs "On Call" he would be rung if a job came up he had 70mins to get to the depot and could be out for upto 11hrs with no driving after 10hrs. This system worked well to be fair it had its floors if you had a big line blockage or other problems of that happened it would be a case of getting the train to most convenient location and recovering it from there when you had resources. Freightliner Intermodal they have kept "Spare" Turns in the rosters at there depots I understand as they are on different T&C's to the Heavy Haul men. Thank's 0D07 Hap and KBarber for the great replies . I did like the ripple lane yarn about the crews being on the moon but I am having trouble with 1M10 at Carlisle it changes to 1M10 Mon and i'm running a tuesday timetable I had to abandon timetable because it wouldn't leave Carlisle then when I tried to put it back on timetable it said incorrect traction but this only happened once so far what's a WRD Hap Regards Gazza

I can't speak for the passenger side, but freight wise, there's rarely if ever a diagrammed spare driver nowadays. Normally if a driver is required at short notice, its a case of grabbing someone for rest day work (drivers make themselves available for it if they want it), grabbing someone "sort of" free like a yard pilot driver, extending a drivers hours if he's on a suitably short diagram, or cancelling another service to free a driver up. Otherwise the service with the vacancy has to be cancelled. having drivers sat around nominally doing nothing doesn't prove cost effective anymore. The likelihood is that you have done something to corrupt the running of the TT as the TT was tested for several hundred hours (I jest not) before release and the problem was not seen. Neither has it been reported here by any of the multitude of users who are masochistic enough to claim they enjoy running the TT.
