I am a very old single "player" for about an hour each evening if I am lucky. I am currenty using Exeter Summer 1985, and was getting on quite well until the first train of the day (1V01) came up from Honiton. I passed it through Pinhoe crossing successfully, but no amount of clicking on the "arr" button (or anything else) would clear the line for the first up train of the day. Can anyone explain this? By the way, I have in the past donated, but if anyone can recommend a simulation comparable in difficulty with this one, Westbury, Carlisle, Derby, I will purchase it by virtue of a birthday present from my son.

Did you remember to operate the Tokenless Block Instrument correctly.

Had a dig around the save and yes it does seem to be a matter of following the instructions.

While train in section between Honiton and Pinhoe, right click on Normal/Accept Indicator to reset indicator to Normal. When train arrives Pinhoe and clears single line section click on Arr - that works for me.

Thank you all for your advice. I had accepted the train in the normal way and it ran through the crossing at Pinhoe. I did not try to change the block controls until after that point. I will go back and try again!

Roger's suggestion above worked, so thank you! It is not quite intuitive to switch the instrument to normal with a train in section. I have run Exeter before, but only with the old-style controls for the section.

I always wait until the train clears the single line, then restore the instrument to normal and click the 'Arr' button, which works fine. As you say, it just doesn't seem right restoring the instrument to Normal when a train is in section.

The real life regulations are as follows:

3.2 When the train has arrived

When the train has occupied and cleared the track circuit beyond your home signal, you must:
•place the home signal to danger
•place the acceptance switch to normal.

When the train arrives, complete with tail lamp, you must operate the train arrived button and check that the block indicator is restored to normal.

If it is necessary to operate the train arrived button before the last vehicle of the train passes your signal box, you must make sure the train has arrived, complete with tail lamp, before doing so.

You must keep the acceptance switch at normal until the train has passed beyond the clearing point.

So is this 'working'

a bug, or just too difficult to get the lock / penalty to work OK at the time of writing the sim ?

As far as I know the acceptance switch can be placed to normal at any time. I would say only that placing it to normal with a train still in the section is a violation of the strict letter of the law, which is presumably written in the way that it is as a belt and braces approach.
