Wouldn't it be nice to create free custom simulators that can be shared on the forum or a built in Workshop? that way the community could greatly expand the current sims without them having to be done officially

Can you read that article? It clearly says that all sins should have high quality. But I said the Sims should not be released publicly on the sim but on the forum where people can download them individualy

At which point you lose all quality control over the product that's available, free or otherwise, with resultant impact on any brand image.

https://www.railwayoperationsimulator.com/ is available for free and supports user developed simulations, but I wouldn't say its anywhere near as authentic or accurate.

Making sims would be nice buuuut... a colossal amount of work, even if you have access to enough details of the real-world system to emulate it directly. Filling in the gaps from the outside is harder work. That's evident if you've ever tried to make a timetable.

I have in mind to make a puzzle game where you're given a track layout and must construct a suitable interlocking to operate it safely - a Zachtronics / Human Resource Machine kind of endeavour where you drag and drop different shapes onto interlocking bars. Would give the interested layperson a way to build interlockings in a way that's not overwhelming.

I don't think that's necessarily true.

I am part of a (non-English speaking) community which develops rail simulations of such fidelity that they can be used to train real staff - and quality is maintained, despite the development tools being freely available.

Firstly, the development process is lengthy and complex(the documentation of the tools is hundreds of pages long), and you only get the reward of a working simulation right at the very end, typically after months of work. I imagine SimSig is the same. This tends to put off anyone who just wants to play around without doing serious research.

The committment to quality is imbued in the community; content which is posted for review is judged against the established quality standards and will be strongly criticised if it does not meet them rather than welcomed as "better than nothing". This sounds rather harsh and it can be, but it's effective at terminating content creation done without proper research or attention to detail.

Finally, just as with SimSig, although independent distribution of files is technically possible, in practice all community content is distributed automatically via an update mechanism after being accepted by the developers of the software. There are published quality standards and automated checks. This provides a final check on quality and differentiates between officially approved content and anything else.

Thus far over several years, all content developers have stayed true to the goal of maintaining the quality standards rather than setting up any "alternative" content sources which don't comply and the brand image is maintained.

(It doesn't really matter what I think anyway. SimSig has had this policy from the very beginning and they aren't going to change it :D)
