Just interested as to why, when developing Westbury (admittedly it was some time ago) the decision was made to include the Reading Newbury Panel as it isn’t/wasn’t a part of Westbury PSB. It causes a bit of headache when timetabling as it is split across two timetable sections in the 60s/70s/80s (WR A and B).

Might have been a desire to be a "Berks & Hants" sim, or maybe the envisioned Reading sim would have been too big. Not sure, it was a long time ago as you say.

And according to TrackMaps, it's now two different panels - plated T as far as Newbury, and TR from Kintbury to Heywood Road!

Photo of the workstation here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/barkingbill/22694102303 Prior to the 2013 immunisation project, the whole of the B&H workstation was re-controlled Reading Panel interlockings; and all had "TR" signal IDs. **** In the "paged" simulation days; that original Westbury development dates from, I expect full Reading panel would have been too big for the maximum 6 screens (for players) the software could do at the time – at a guess it would be 7 screens. Also worth noting the Newbury Panel was a late addition to Reading. (Was it back end of the 1970s or even early 1980s?) I never visited Reading but I was given to understand it was shoehorned into the space between the original panel and the front of the box. I have a feeling it was also a push-push panel rather than the turn-push variety that had previously been most typical of Western installations. So it was always a bit of an outlier, regardless of which sim it ended up in.

From my memory the main panel was operated by 2 signallers & the B&H panel by 1. Always enjoyed the rare opportunity to go and watch the signallers go about their work & always jumped at the chance to be allowed to have go myself! When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. From the user / timetabling end, it gives more to do on Westbury as well as meaning poor regulating decisions land back with the user ! Even without the Newbury section, 'old' Reading might be a bit much for one player Bill Log in to reply |

I was living in Reading in 2011, when the goods lines were lifted and the box was demolished. I have photos of it myself, taken from the old pedestrian bridge from the car park to the station concourse. Long gone now, of course ...
