I just started playing around with the sim last week.
I still have one problem, sometimes trains need to be named manually.
This isn't a problem when it just shows '****' instead. The problem is when nothing is show.

How am I supposed to rename a train that doesn't show up? I can see that it's occupying the track, but that's about it.

There are a couple of ways to identify a train with no Train Description. One is to look on the Train List (F2) and see if there are any trains in that location. If you still can't identify it, work out the signal number of the first red signal it will come to, don't change it from red and wait for the driver to call in.

IDing the train isn't a problem.

I just can't see the trains on the board.
When they show up as '****', then I can ID them and change it to the correct ID.

But if I can't see anything (except for the occupied track and the listing in the train list), what am I supposed to do?
(Could this be a bug?)

It could be a track circuit failure but you would get a message telling you that there is a failure.

I doubt it. I just started the Bristol sim (less then 2 minutes on the clock) and I have 6 'invisible' trains.
BTW, all the 'invisible' trains came from sidings. The trains coming from 'outside' are fine.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for trying to help, but thats just not the problem have.

I know exactly which train it is and what it's timetable is, but it's very difficult to remember this when the train ID doesn't show up on the board!

I tried continuing (half hoping that some point something would change) but without train IDs on the board, I get the trains mixed up after a few minutes.

I have given up on this specific sim (Bristol) for now and switched to KingsX.
So far no problems of this kind.

Right, those that don't appear with anything. Once you have identified the train using the train list (F2) then right click on the associated signal, this will then give you an option to 'interpose Train Description' click this and then enter the 4 digit train ID, eg 6D12..

In order to use the menu as described above, you need to press F3 and un-set the option "Right click cancels route"

If you don't want to do this, press I on the keyboard, type the train ID and then left-click the signal where the train is. This should interpose the ID.

depends on the sim, sheffield has some signals where you cant interpose the train ids like the shunt necks opposite platform 1. i think this is true to real life. what sim are you playing?

In that case you have to interpose at the next signal the train will reach. You can do this before setting any route to that signal (just be careful you don't let another train through first).

On the real life panels there are many locations that don't have train describer berths so the train occupies track circuits but appears to have no name. It's up to the signalman to remember what's there (by whatever means works for him/her) and act accordingly. (In theory, as far as I'm aware, there's nothing in the rules to stop you running the train right to the edge of your area without a description, so long as you set one up so it's transmitted to the next box. And if the describers fail - not entirely unknown - you have to do that anyway, describing trains to adjoining boxes by telephone; now there's one for the developers to simulate!!!) When I had access to boxes (up to late '80s) a lot of signalmen didn't bother setting up descriptions at all for local shunt moves, simply relied on their awareness of what was going on in their control area, so if any of your appearing trains are a light loco going to pick up a train that's waiting nearby you're probably absolutely correct in letting it run undescribed.

You can also also click on TD Interpose, which you'll find next to the telephone symbol, enter the train ID into the textbox that's displayed then click on the signal that the train is approaching.
