I'm not sure if this is correct and possibly due to a lower line speed, but I would have expected that routes from EY653 to the Down and Up Passenger Loops at Dalmeny would be approach controlled. As things stand EY653 clears to Off immediately for all 3 possible routes.

It depends on the line speed off of the Winchburgh line. I don't have any easy access to the sectional appendix any more but if you can email me a copy or if you happen to know the line speeds I'll have a look at it.

Line speed is 50mph, reducing to 40mph approaching then 30mph over junction according to Sectional Appendix I downloaded from http://www.networkrail.co.uk/browseDirectory.aspx?dir=Baseline%20CapabilityTrack%20and%20route%20mileage,%20Permissible%20line%20speeds&pageid=5523&root= (SC113-001 on P200 of the document).

Beware - it is a 190Mb download for the Scottish document

Just downloading all 190mb!! I hadn't realised you could get copies of an albeit outdated section appendix online.

I am afraid that I don't have access to that information either. I think I have a Sectional Appendix from a few years ago, but as usual when you want these things I can't find it. I suppose my question is why is approach control on EY651 for the routes to the passenger loops but not on EY653. Has it been left off intentionally?

ok downloaded it now.

EY651 has approach control to the loops because the linespeed on approach to the junction is 60mph (80 for HST's) and the speed into the Down Passenger Loop is 40mph. (the xover for the UPL is 30mph).

The linespeed off of the Winchburgh line is 30mph. Because all trains must be doing 30mph there is no need to apply approach control to EY653 signal because drivers will be expecting to do 30mph at the junction, will have seen the route indication given on EY653 and accelerate accordingly.
