When I tried to download the Signal Diagram for KX yesterday my browser (FF3.6) blanked out the North London space and stopped. I have just tried all the others - Only Liv St and Drain work. The Westbury and Trent links are to the Description pages, not Signal Diagrams.

I have no idea of how I could correct this for you.

All seem OK to my browser (IE7).

Will look into the Westbury/Trent links, not sure that those sig nos plans are available.
Update: Westbury & Trent not done, links to manuals as a substitute.

Thanks for checking. Just tried again and all seems well. The bigger files just take slightly longer to load, so it might have been heavy traffic at my ISP causing time outs.

Did anyone take this further as I'm trying to do exactly the same for KX sig diagram and Firefox still locking up or coming back with the following
Not Acceptable

An appropriate representation of the requested resource /dokuwiki/lib/exe/fetch.php could not be found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I tried and I had no problem in downloading it.

Who knows what happens. I just realized that as web server became more complicate, the more probable is that some unexplainable and not-reproducible errors sometime happen.

After much flaffing about managed to get IE7 to work and downloaded the diagrams without too much hastle. Maybe probs with FF then, using 3.0.13 but unwilling to upgrade as there is I understand issues with latest upgrade - if it ain't broke don't fix it attitude I'm afraid.

Well, having had no trouble downloading the PDF's from this thread http://www.SimSig.co.uk/index.php?option=com_agora&task=topic&id=1112&p=1&Itemid=54#p7456 I'm not so sure it is FF playing up. Something in the way PDF's are located in the Wiki?

Some links to signal diagrams like Didcot are dead. Other links only work (my browser is Chrome) with right-clicking > 'open in new tab'.

The link on usertrack:sims:didcot was dead because it was trying to open a link from the old Wiki. However, checking nicksandpit:didcot (which I think is basically a direct copy from the old Wiki) there was somehow a working signalling diagram link for Didcot to a file on the new Wiki. Therefore, I have taken the link from nicksandpit:didcot and used it as the link to the signalling diagram on usertrack:sims:didcot and it works for me so should work for everyone else too (although to get it to work when opening the link from nicksandpit:didcot I had to open it in a new tab first and then I was able to close it and reopen it with a standard left-click).

That is the beauty of the Wiki (and any Wiki, i.e: Wikipedia), it is a community project and anyone with an account could edit it to improve it, which includes things like repairing dead links, correcting any typos / spelling mistakes / grammar errors, etc.

UKTM makes a very important point about the Wiki being a community-based repository of knowledge. That means that anyone with the time, inclination and knowledge can not only edit and amend; they can also create new documents. I haven't put any signalling diagrams together for some time now, but if anyone else wants to start filling in the gaps, then please do so. I created most of my diagrams using the free Open Office software which enables direct output as pdf files but diagrams in any of the common formats would be equally useful - and someone will probably convert them to pdfs if they are posted as something else. Who is going to be first at putting up Westbury or Trent?

Further to my previous post, it has only just occurred to me within the last couple of hours that it couldn't hurt to do a check on the other simulations to see if any of the other links were dead. The results of this check are as follows:

Please note: If I say the link works then I mean it works for me (using Google Chrome), although sometimes I had to open the link in a new tab or new window to get it to work normally. If it doesn't work for yourself then you may find that doing this works for you by using the same/similar command within your browser.

King's Cross - Link already works
Liverpool Street - Link fixed and now works
North London Line - Link fixed and now works
Peterborough - Link fixed and now works
Cambridge - Link already works
Royston - Link fixed and now works
Sheffield - See paragraph below
Stafford - Link already works
Bristol - Link already works
Exeter - Link fixed and now works
Gloucester - Link already works
Swindon A & B - Link already works*
Didcot - Link already works (as you can see from previous posts in this thread).
Southampton - Link already works**
Central Scotland - ?***
Edinburgh - ?***
Drain - Link fixed and now works.

* = The Signalling Diagram for Swindon A & B is actually the signalling diagram for the original Swindon A (Swindon itself) and doesn't cover Swindon B (Didcot) too. I wonder if it may be useful to, perhaps as a temporary measure until someone can create a full signalling diagram for Swindon A & B, link to the signalling diagram for Swindon B (Didcot) on the page for Swindon A & B whilst also adding a little note explaining the situation.

** = The signalling diagram for Southampton is actually from the old paged version of Southampton. I don't see a major problem with that as the signal numbers shouldn't be any different but if possible it should be replaced.

*** = I'm not entirely sure if CScot / Edinburgh even have signalling diagrams yet?!!

For Sheffield I was able to fix the link for the 1980s era signalling diagram and that now works however I had problems with fixing the link for the modern era signalling diagram. As the link for it was still leading to the old Wiki I thought I would edit it anyway based on the normal way I edit the links however it still doesn't work for me. If it does actually work for anyone could they please reply to this post or if someone can get it to work somehow (perhaps the link itself needs altering?) then please also reply to this post or alternatively if someone could even fix the link in the Wiki to make it work then please do so.

As Postal has said above, the following don't yet have a signalling diagram:

Trent
Westbury
Waterloo

The signalling diagrams of Didcot, Liverpool Street and Royston still don't work. The screen gets grey or white while opening the diagrams, and nothing appears.

Drain and North London Line now work fine. The layout plan of the NLL not, though it's a link to the new wiki.

Albert, you may have a localised problem as the 3 links you mentioned as not working have all opened fine for me, as well as the NLL layout plan. Perhaps others may identify the technical issues. I have Adobe reader 10.1 and using Windows 7.

It should be even easier with sims that have the F11 option enabled- points can be numbered too without inside knowledge.

Apologies to all - I was on my way out of the house when I put the last posting up at 09:36. It was only when I got into the car that I realised how brusque it would look.

There are probably much easier ways to do it, but my method for creating the diagrams used a number of simple steps.

1) Grab a screenshot of the area to be put into a diagram.
2) Paste the screenshot into a graphics or drawing program (Photoshop, Open Office Drawing or whatever - there are lots of freeware choices as well as paid-for options.
3) Edit the screenshot to crop and remove the unwanted areas like the toolbar and system tray along the bottom.
4) Go back to the area, use F11 to identify each signal then add the numbers as text in the graphics or drawing program.
5) For the older sims built up with Views, one view per page fits nicely. For the scrolly sims, I had to move around the sim doing a number of screenshots which I then had to paste into the graphics or drawing program and jiggle around until I had the new screenshot aligned with the shots already pasted in. I also had to create a custom page size to get the whole scrolly sim into one diagram.

Hope that makes sense.

That doesn't sound too hard to do however I'm a bit puzzled how the current signalling diagrams have a white background when the in-game background is black.

I'm thinking about having a go at Waterloo now - but cannot promise it will be as good as the other signalling diagrams!

Thanks.

Paintshop-pro has a 'negative' option which inverts the colours, which I use if I want to print a copy of the screen during development. I guess something like that has been used. 'Fill' with [white] can achive a similar effect.

Sorry - missed that bit from the instructions. Most graphic packages have an option to invert the colours (even dear old MS Paint).

I've made a tentative start on doing the signalling diagram for Waterloo and have so far done 25% of it - having numbered all the signals on VW1.

Here is how it is looking at the moment, as of Sunday 20th June at just after 9am

For those wondering I've used MS Paint and the signal numbers are in Arial font, size 12.

When it came to positioning the actual signal numbers, I decided to place almost all of them, where space permitted, two grid squares away (I magnified the image 6x / 8x and turned on grid view before positioning the numbers) and also in-line with the whole signal (i.e: signal post and signal aspect), although orignially I had placed the signal numbers more in-line with only the signal aspect but this meant each number had two grid squares above and two grid squares below the actual signal aspect. I have deliberately misaligned Shunt Signals 433 and 435 (Carriage Sidings 2 & 1 respectively) to show you how it looks when the signal number is aligned only with the signal aspect. All of the other signals are aligned with both signal aspect and signal post. Finally, I followed the same theme as Liverpool Street, where-by most signal numbers are displayed after the signal they relate to, except where space was a problem (i.e: Signal 81 on the Down Main Fast).

You'll note that it turns out I have accidentally left track circuits showing, although personally I'd prefer it this way as track circuits are part of the signalling system and it could be useful to show them in a signalling diagram anyway. Also, I've accidentally left point positions showing too.

Please be aware that this is my first attempt and should be considered a work in progress. Any comments or suggestions are of course welcome.

Thanks.

Looks OK to me, showing TC breaks is good as is point position as that shows the Normal (unless you've changed any).

Just a thought whether to do the numbers in a colour that stands out?

John, with regards to your howto with scrollys, you can infact simply Right Click (as if you were making a Sticky Note) and click Save Bitmap

Well, isn't that magic. It's a poor day when you don't learn something new. Thanks for the tip, James.

Building on it, if you open the saved bitmap in a graphics program you can get the size of the image. If your program gives the size in cm. it makes it much easier to set up the custom page size you require if you using a drawing or presentation type package to create the final diagram. That will be handy if I ever get another diagram drawn because I normally use Open Office Drawing which lets me export direct to pdf.

PS Looking good, UKTM.

There was me thinking that the current Signalling Diagrams were made using some kind of developer copy or debugging copy of the simulations with the white background used to distinguish it from the publicly released version, perhaps as some kind of way of catching out anyone who may have somehow obtained the image or even a copy of the unreleased simulation and might try to publish the image online somewhere, without permission.

Peter Bennet said:

Points were not changed and are in the Normal position.

I have made a few changes and here is Version 2 of VW1, as of Sunday 20th June at just after 10pm.

Changes made are as follows;

    - Signal numbers are now in bold, Comic Sans MS font and size 11.
    - Signal numbers for country-bound signals (signals out of Waterloo) are now aligned with the top of the aspect.
    - Signal numbers for London-bound signals (signals into Waterloo) are now aligned with the bottom of the aspect.
    - All signal numbers are still two pixels/grid squares away from the signal aspect, unless space is limited.

Feedback welcomed.

Thanks.
