Considering all the snow that's fallen today, it got me thinking about snowploughs and what head codes do they have?

Is it like a generic code like 1Z99 which I think is a light engine going to assist a failed train, or do they have set head code according to there route, like the rhtts which have a different code for their circuits.

Would be intresting to have one operating on a sim, like clearing a blocked line etc.

Although I haven't found anything about what Headcodes snow clearing trains use, I have found a couple of pages that maybe useful for those that want to add snow clearing trains to timetables.

I've noticed a few moves in the Carlisle area a couple months back with Snowploughs utilising DRS 66s and a plough at each end. It ran as 7Z** code Kingmoor to Kingmoor via Dumfries and back. There will be one in my Carlisle 27th December timetable called 7Z05 and 7Z06 timed at 45mph.

When I was on the loco control it used to run as 1Z99 as it was technically clearing the line for trains to run similarly to a resue loco going to assist a failed train. However there are a few different snowplaoughs that run on the network around the UK & it really depends where you are & what you might see. There is the Bellihack snowplaugh which IIRC was like an On Track Machine like one called Partimign' which was based on the Southern Region whether it still is I don't know as I'm going back to BR days. The Independant snowploughs at Peak Forest & Buxton ran as 1Z99 & usually had a pair of Cl.37 locos working in multiple with the snowplough at each end. I finished a timetable a couple of weeks ago which has snowploughs in it if you opt for the bad weather scenario for a new sim to be released at some point. I do have a technical drawing of the Independant snowplough & I'll uploadf it onto the forum when I find it.

These are the timings I've founded from a while back which ran Top & Tailed DRS 66s in multi with ZZA Snowploughs ADB 965224/965230 Carlisle Based. Not 100% sure on the 7Z** timings as they look a bit more to been 60mph.

IIRC the ZZA snowploughs were formerly Cl.40 bogies & maube some Cl.45.0 bogies that were converted. Some were converted at Stratford Works & they were re-paointed in all over yellow with black lettering similarly to track machines. Going back to my ealier post I did take a photo of the Bellihack snowplough in Inverness TMD, but unfortunately the photo didn't come out too clear due to inadequate lihjting, but that machine had 2 large rotating blades at one end of it to clear snow off the tracks. I think Partimign was something similar based on the former BR Southern Region. Someone out there might actually know where that machine actually resides today.

A snowplough going to clear the line should be 1Z99 (Rule Book module Preparation and Movement of Trains Regulation 6).

The timings I have to hand were test runs to make sure all was ok with them.

As above, ploughs run as 1Z99 when clearing the line. They run without a schedule on instruction from Control. It would actually make for a very boring scenario in SimSig as if the ploughs are out (running slowly, with frequent stops to clear sections by hand with shovels and pauses to check and adjust the skids and flaps) then nothing else would be running.

There are two Beilhack rotary snow blowers, ADB968500 and ADB968501 - the latter was built for Network South East in 1989. Both are now maintained by Babcock Rail and are based at Rutherglen OTP depot on the outskirts of Glasgow. They do occasionally transit around Scotland under their own power, usually running as 7Z09, and have seen a fair bit of use on the West Highland Line, Aberdeen - Inverness and the Far North over the last 10 years or so.

So you arrange matters so that the snowplough appears at random and generally gets in the way so the Signalman has to work round it as best as he can.

Beilhack Patrol Ploughs

When attached to ploughs, locomotives must not exceed 45mph

Normal working may continue on adjoining lines while patrolling/ploughing is in progress unless the person in charge considers a risk exists to traffic using these lines. In such cases selected blockages should be imposed at the discretion of the person in charge.

The Beilhack Patrol ploughs and locomotives must be signalled by the train Identification Code 1Z88 and where train describers are not in use must be signalled by the special Is line clear signal 2-1-1.

Beilhack Self - Propelled rotary snow blower machines

Speed must not exceed that shown in the following table :-
Circumstance Machine No. ADB 968500 ADB 968501
When :- MPH MPH
Snow blowing 40 40
(30 over points and crossings)

Hauling support vehicles 40 40
(30 over points and crossings)

Propelling support vehicles 20 20

Moved “dead” 40 50
