I have a situation where a signal has failed. I observed that the G and R aspect have failed, it can display Y and YY. I could just talk the train past both the failure, and the proceeding. However if I hold the signal 2 in advance at the most restrictive aspect and after the train has passed the "failed" signal release the hold. The train will slow a bit but not need to halt. My question, would this be considered or is it absolutely forbidden. some screen shots attached to explain the situation. Post has attachments. Log in to view them. Log in to reply |

Not forbidden in the slightest. Signalman would likely hold a preceding signal at danger in order to prevent the driver seeing any changes of aspect while they set the failed signal to the right aspect. Some of the more modern signalling systems the technicians would be able to restrict the failed signal to showing certain aspects only, so long as the signalman held trains back before approaching the signal they could just use it normally; it would never clear to more than YY Log in to reply The following users said thank you: 9pN1SEAp, Airvan00 |

Not only would it be considered, but it's the preferred practice. It is much better to have the train proceed under warning signals than to have to talk it past a red. The former is normal operation; the latter removes lots of safety features. Log in to reply The following user said thank you: Airvan00 |
