I have an ordinary passenger train at Larbert station where it will terminate and run empty carraige to the loop to run round. Naturally the as the loco comes back onto the main will be signaled shunt into forward section (3-3) and shunt removed (8). But what of the ECS should that be shunt into forward section (3-3), then vehicles at a stand (3-3-4) followed by the ILC for class 2 (3-1)?

Just to clarify, Is this a procedural question or a technical question about how to actually get it to work? The first I can't help with but the second I should be able to advise on. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

3-3 is blocking back outside, not shunting into forward section (3-3-2), and the light loco would indeed need to be signalled with the latter if authorised at that location (otherwise offered normally and cancelled?). 3-3-4 is only used in connection with blocking back outside the home signal, where the section is short and thus the rear box (A) has certain restrictions when a movement outside the home signal at B is taking place (towards A). Specifically, in the Rule Book (before it was removed!), if B's home is less than 880yds from A's home, A is not allowed to accept a train from the box in rear once 3-3 has been acknowledged, until 3-3-4 has been received to confirm that no further movement towards A (from B) will take place. In any case, it's not relevant in this case. What would actually happen for a train entering the section as ECS and forming a passenger service mid-section, I don't know. I suspect it would be signalled as 3-1 as normal - it certainly wouldn't be re-offered mid-section, and it's not the intended use of 5-3 either. Log in to reply |

Exactly that does happen between Malvern Wells and Newland East on the Worcester-Hereford line. I think the trains are just signalled using their passenger working codes, ie 4s or 3-1s.
