Was travelling up the US from Stoke Jn to Peterborough this evening (55022 tour) and noticed that on the DS every 1/4 mile or so (not regularly spaced) that there were treadle switches. Anyone know what they are for?

Not quite though that looks like the control gubbins that would go inside the thing. The things I am referring to are the standard BR treadles that you can see approaching say level crossings.to trip the closure sequence.

I remember asking somewhere about these some years ago. I *think* the consensus was that there was major work going on on the DS, and these were to activate a warning system (TOWS?).

If it was for TOWS then the treadle I am used to seeing for it is a silver-coloured square 'box' just inside one of the rails, a bit like as seen in this photo. Of-course it could always be different around the country.
