Is there any way to change the ARS fonts to a different colour? Purple on black is a bugger to read. Maybe white on black would be better?

If you're referring to the colour of Non-ARS TDs, or the colour of sub-area labels, then they can't be changed. However, the colour of ARS messages in the message box can be changed via the F3 menu, 'Messages' tab.
