I said at the last Derby meet that I would be done with sorting out meets after the March Peterborough meet as I felt that I had done my time in organising getting on for 20 meets. However an opportunity with suitable venue and date has now come forward which is too good to miss. I was talking to a former work colleague who lives in Edinburgh a little while ago and mentioned in passing that we struggled to find venues North of the border. I wish I had kept quiet because Alan came back with a list of over a dozen venues all of which would be more or less suitable for us and all of which he had personally visited on our behalf. Karl (Headshot119) and I have today been to meet Alan in Edinburgh and have visited a number of the potential venues. There were several that would have served our purpose but we have picked the one we thought best suited us and confirmed the booking. It can therefore be announced that a meet will take place on the afternoon of Saturday 4th. July at The Beehive Inn, 18-20 Grassmarket, Edinburgh, EH1 2JU. The first details can be found here in the Meets section of the Wiki. The sign-up sheet will appear in the Upcoming Events section in due course. “In life, there is always someone out there, who won’t like you, for whatever reason, don’t let the insecurities in their lives affect yours.” – Rashida Rowe Log in to reply The following users said thank you: headshot119, JamesN, ajax103, HST125Scorton, Hap, WesternChampion |

I would have attended however at this time I'm working and don't finish until 3pm so no chance unless a work colleague wants a extra Saturday. Pity though as I would have welcomed a Scottish meet. Log in to reply |

Dunno if this will be any help for those who may come by car, but since the city centre is absolutely extortionate for parking, there are several park and rides dotted around the outskirts. Newcraighall is directly off the A1, at 50p per 24 hours and/or a Premier in also with it's own parking at the same slip road. A Off-peak day return Newcraighall - EDB will skin you all of £3.50. Journey time of no more than 10 minutes. half hourly service during the day, hourly mid evening. But also a number 30 bus gets you back out if the train was missed. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Newcraighall+Park+And+Ride/@55.9337746,-3.0952289,404m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x4887b90c4dd4ae77:0x89b89b40447b333d!8m2!3d55.9336489!4d-3.0927372 Sheriffhall Park & Ride is more to the South outskirts with many busses into the city. Lothian busses operate a service 33 which runs every 20 minutes, journey times around 30 minutes to get onto Princes street. £4.50 for a day ticket, £1.80 Single. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Sheriffhall+Park+and+Ride+(Stop+B)/@55.9025248,-3.1003334,1715m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m7!3m6!1s0x4887b9302b7f16d9:0x6a174d4283e0cf0a!6m1!1v5!8m2!3d55.9054679!4d-3.098804 And Hermiston Gate PArk & ride to the West edges of the city. Multiple busses into the city. Lothian busses operate from here with the same £4.50 day ticket, £1.80 single. First bus also operate from here but have a significantly higher fare structure. Journey times are around 35/40 minutes. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hermiston+Park+%26+Ride/@55.9204143,-3.3150343,1019m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m7!3m6!1s0x4887c43eec323965:0xb1d0fd7c25203b79!6m1!1v5!8m2!3d55.917324!4d-3.3140389 The good thing about Edinburgh are the Night busses. Separate ticket would be needed but they run most main routes if anyone was staying out passed bed time. I'm on holiday that day, and was planning to be crossing the Forth around that time. So I'm a definite maybe, will ask the other half if I'm allowed to go play.

With luck I'm on holiday that week in Edinburgh sightseeing with my gf, so I should be able to pop over and have a couple of hours :-).

We have about half of the upstairs area reserved for our meet. In the fourth of the interior photos on the Meet page of the Wiki a step at the end of the wooden floor can be seen. Our reserved area is beyond that step. The remainder of the area will be open to the public (usual Saturday rules open the area from about 14:00). If anyone is travelling with a significant other and they don't want to expose them to tables full of geeks using headcode-speak they are welcome to use the other half of the bar or the main bar downstairs for socialising and eating. We will have access to the other half of the upstairs before 14:00 and can carry food and drink upstairs but the upstairs bar will not be staffed.

To try and repay my former colleague Alan for the legwork he has put in to visit all of the potential venues can I suggest that anyone staying in Edinburgh on the Friday night and who likes "classic Rock and Soul music predominantly but not exclusively from the 1960s" attends a gig where "The Banned" are playing not far from The Beehive. Alan is the drummer in "The Banned". They will be performing at Whistle Binkies. 4-6 South Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1LL in a set running from 21:30 to 23:45. Further details will be posted on the Wiki page, “In life, there is always someone out there, who won’t like you, for whatever reason, don’t let the insecurities in their lives affect yours.” – Rashida Rowe Last edited: 22/02/2020 at 21:57 by postal Reason: None given Log in to reply The following user said thank you: Hap |

Registration has now opened for the meet here. There is more information about the meet in the Wiki on this page. Please be aware that we are only doing this to try and gauge potential numbers. We have no indication yet as to how or when the current lockdown will start to be eased so there is no guarantee that the venue will be available for a meet on the 4th. July and there is no guidance as to whether any groups will be considered at higher risk and discouraged from travelling. It would be unwise to book any travel or accommodation to tie in with a trip to the meet unless you can make arrangements on a fully refundable basis, in case we cannot go ahead with the meet. Any further information about the meet will be added to this topic as it becomes available. “In life, there is always someone out there, who won’t like you, for whatever reason, don’t let the insecurities in their lives affect yours.” – Rashida Rowe Last edited: 13/04/2020 at 10:14 by postal Reason: None given Log in to reply |

The Government announced yesterday that the timeline for the earliest possible opening of bars and licensed premises would be July 4th. and that any opening would be on a restricted basis. In light of that announcement we have reluctantly had to take the decision to cancel the Edinburgh Meet scheduled for July 4th. While that is not good news for us all, we already thinking forward and hope that the meet will be able to take place in July 2021. Further news about that will follow in due course. “In life, there is always someone out there, who won’t like you, for whatever reason, don’t let the insecurities in their lives affect yours.” – Rashida Rowe Log in to reply The following user said thank you: andyb0607 |
