Installing onto Mac OS X 08/06/2020 at 14:36 #127416

Hi folks! I'm new to all this SimSig world, and really keen on giving it a try, however I'm just having a lot of dead ends with trying to install and getting it running on my iMac.

I have tried following the Installation guide on the website, however the instructions don't correlate with the present version of Crossover. I have tried installing the system files, followed by Donationware sims to just try out and see what it's like, but can get nothing working.

If there is an existing thread on this anywhere, I would greatly appreciate referring to that as a guide. Otherwise, if anyone here is a Mac OS user and able to step a simple minded fellow into the process of installing and getting it running, that'd also be greatly appreciated!

Ultimately, I want to download and enjoy Manchester South sim once I figure out how to get everything running.

Many thanks

Hi, if I understand it correctly you already have run the installer for the system files? You should get a menu entry for the SimSig loader when you do so. Most sims (except from a few old donationware ones) are accessed from there.

You may have some luck using the PlayOnMac software instead. By chance, I was trialling a new installation method for Mac and Linux the other day, although I've not had any Mac users test it yet.

Note: Only works for MacOSX versions before Catalina.
Steps:
1) Install PlayOnMac following their instructions.
2) Navigate to the SimSig PlayOnMac installer page, and click on the blue "Try this Update" button near the bottom right of the page. (Either one will work).
3) Follow the wizard to install SimSig. The final step will launch the SimSig Updater to select individual sims to install.
4) SimSig should be able to be launched from the PlayOnMac launcher.

I should note that nobody else has yet reviewed the install script I've written, I would welcome anyone else technically minded to review it, to give some confidence that I'm not up to anything nasty(!)

You may have to wait a while - according to the PlayOnLinux website - posts dated 31st May - PlayOnMac will not run on the latest Mac OS versions i.e. Catalina 10.15.x until they have rewritten some of the code (something to do with Mac only running 64bit apps if I've understood it correctly).
When I tried it I got the error message “PlayOnMac” cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified.
