I’m playing the Peterborough May – Sept 1985 timetable and at 23:40 I’m ready to use the Ground Frame and route 6E53 (which came from the Hitchen direction) into Superior Int’l.
The timetable shows that there is an activity: DCR: FERRYVANS
The Wiki explains DCR as follows:
DCR:xxxx - Drop Coaches Rear - The rear part of the train (usually consisting of coaches alone) separates from the front.

At approximately 23:50 I noticed, whilst glancing at the Train List, that 6E53 is ready to depart, but that the FerryVans are in front of it. (first screenshot)

This would suggest that the FerryVans were in front of the Class 47 locomotive when it arrived at the reversing point but obviously this wouldn’t have been the case.
So, it seems that the FerryVans were dropped from the rear according to the direction of travel when the train entered the siding and not from its original direction of travel.

I remedied this situation by changing the activity to DCF: FerryVans in the Train List after which I took another screenshot. (second screenshot)
When I continued everything was hunky dory and 6E53 left the siding as expected.

Note: I could have explained this without going into so much detail, but I like writing rubbish novels 😊

For detachments F and R refer to the last direction of travel.

Yes, I was aware of that and I’m sure that have read that somewhere in the Wiki?
As it happens, it wouldn’t have mattered if 6E53 was stuck behind the FerryVans in the siding because when I did get it out of the siding, all it did was travel to P3 at Huntingdon where it terminated.

6E53 always was a pain int he neck when I was in the Brent. Best thing we ever did was get rid of it to Temple Mills to sort out...

Massively multi-portioned, but we were an intermediate call (it was Dover - Tyne IIRC, or perhaps Dover - Belmont). With most trains we were making them up from scratch, or the portioning wasn't too complicated (6S73 Dover - Mossend, for example). But for 6E53 there would always be traffic for every portion, so endless shunts in & out of the road it came in on, tying up target 9 (the North End shunt loco for hours), all in the middle of the 'evening peak' (approx 18:00 - 22:30, when we had about 6 or 7 trains to make up for the overnight trunk runs). In the 3 months after it started running via Temple Mills our right-time departures rose from barely 20% to well over 50%, before I even started working on the other problems we had.
