On the requirement for TRTS to be given - is this actually specified as an absolute requirement anywhere? If I've had a problem at a station where TRTS is operated by the station staff, I usually phone the signalman directly when I'm ready to go, having come to a clear understanding with the station staff and guard first. I've never had a problem with that approach and I've certainly never had a signalman demand that someone go and press the button instead! At smaller stations where we're self-dispatched (by the guard) but with TRTS provided, we normally just phone up or press 'SG' to get the road when we're ECS (DOO). As others have said, it's also the case that signalmen will sometimes pull off without waiting for TRTS, if there's no other movements that'd be delayed if the train didn't depart as planned. On at least one occasion (admittedly early in the morning), I've driven into the car park at work and seen that the signal's already been cleared for my train! Log in to reply |

At Piccadilly, the use of RA is mandated in the sectional appendix with only light locos and MPVs excluded - TRTS effectively becomes mandated as well as the dispatcher will operate both TRTS the RA; if we were to use SG with no dispatcher present we would be unable to depart and be tying up a route.
There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway. Log in to reply |

It states who is responsible for operating it at each location whether it's Dispatch staff, Conductor or Driver. Plenty of traincrew notices also stating when it should pressed and who presses it etc, especially when it comes to ARS. Once PTI (Platform Train Interface) became a massive thing, there's been strict procedures when trains are dispatched. Must be someone on the platform to watch it go to ensure pax don't go near the train etc. Again, other TOCs may have different procedures. When I worked for Souhtern Railway on the platforms at London Bridge in 2008/09 and Chichester, Barnham, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and Worthing. It was different at each station. At London Bridge we had to TRTS all trains (as it was a terminal) except sandite/de-icer and test trains 2 minutes before departure time on trains going to New Cross Gate and 1 min for trains going to Peckham Rye all depending on if the train crew were ready. When Thamelink were running into the Central side over night, 9 out of 10 times the signaller used to set the route out before the incoming train had come to a stand. At Bognor Regis and Littlehampton we used to comunicate with the signalbox via radio because the signaller used to hate the TRTS sound in the box. At Worthing we only used the TRTS to let the signaller at Lancing know when the Littlehampton portion was ready (after splitting from the Portsmouth train from London Victoria on a sunday). At Chichester we rarley had any communication with the signaller except if the problems. At Barnham even though TRTS was provided on all platforms we told not to use them except when a train was being held for connections.

Hi Can I just add to the original post that half of my trains are not TRTS just showing as waiting for NSxxx to show proceed. I have no delays at the moment and delays are not switched on! Many thanks Francis Log in to reply |
