Been running under Wine since December, no problems until Loader 5.x came along. Whether it was trying to resolve that or unconnected I don't know, ended up reinstalling Linux, now on Ubuntu 20.04 and Wine 5.something-or-other (I'm not a power user!) Loader seems to install OK, but on attempting to start it gets to the Select simulation' page OK, but on trying to start a new sim the list of sims is unpopulated and it sticks at 'finding available simulations...' with system monitor showing it taking 135 of CPU resources. Only way out at that point is to end process. Starting from command line, on issuing the wine command I get: 00c0:err:msxml:domdoc_load_from_stream Failed to parse xml. First page opens OK with normal CPU load (too small to register). Attempting to start a new sim results in the hang as before, with following errors in the terminal: Could not find Wine Gecko. HTML rendering will be disabled. 00c0:err:mshtml:create_document_object Failed to init Gecko, returning CLASS_E_CLASSNOTAVAILABLE 00c0:err:msxml:domdoc_load_from_stream Failed to parse xml 00c0 seems to change each time I try, though the initial 00 seems common to all. If anyone has an idea where to start with this it would be very much appreciated. Log in to reply |

You need to install Gecko which is used to render HTML pages - which frequently occur in SimSig. Wine should offer you a way to install it the first time you open a program with a new version of Wine. (It also offers you Mono, which you do not need for SimSig.) If you clicked no there and want to install Gecko anyway (without having to delete all your Windows programs) see here: https://wiki.winehq.org/Gecko AJP in games Log in to reply |

Many thanks Albert... some progress. But I now have a rather limited list of sims... Aston, Liverpool St or Peterborough. Checking for updates gives an 'up to date' response. Meanwhile, I have a warning that Simsig cannot communicate with the server. Can anyone help further? Log in to reply |

I haven't had that one before, though I did update from Loader 4 to Loader 5 instead of doing a fresh install. Which Loader version are you on now?

There is no such setting in Wine as it emulates Internet Explorer using Gecko, which uses Mozilla libraries for TLS which have sane defaults; unless you manually installed Internet Explorer, but that is pretty hard on 64-bit versions of Wine so I guess you haven't done that. I do believe, that I had some trouble with the default folder location in the past - could you go to the .wine folder in your home folder (press Ctrl-H to make it visible as it is hidden by default) then browse to drive_c/users/Public/Documents/SimSig to see what is there? What you could try is setting the Windows version to something more recent in the configuration panel that you can open by running winecfg in a terminal, but I don't think that that changes any TLS settings. Curiouser and curiouser. Loader tells me it's V5.0. I've just uninstalled and reinstalled and get the same result. Clicking 'check for updates' still tells me it's up to date. Public/etc has folders for simulations and timetables; the simulation files present are the three mentioned above. Currently running Wine as Win10. I wonder if the 'Could not communicate with server' message on the first loader page has anything to do with it? Inputting my username and password results in nothing happening, but there is a red circle with a white X in it to the right of the password field. (My password is a relatively simple one, that doesn't seem to have given any problems to date... I've no idea whether it would meet Simsig's modern standards, but I've had no difficulty using it to log in to the website... could it be that I have grandfather rights there but not in the loader? But if so, wouldn't it tell me the password is unacceptable? And even if that's the problem, why those 3 sims in particular when there are several other donationware ones that could also have appeared?) Log in to reply |

If you are getting a red cross on the front page of the loader, then it's not connecting to the server (If you can login here, you should be able to on the loader). There must be something blocking the connection, I'm just not sure what. Tried logging in 09:13BST. Full sequence: On opening Loader initially my username and password were already in and it had already gone to 'Could not communicate...'; that would have been around 09:11 or 09:12. I deleted both (got 'contacting server' followed by 'could not...'), then re-entered details 09:13 and the 'Could not...' message appeared within 1 second. Thanks for all the help so far. @Geoff: In case you want to know what the user agent of SimSig through Wine looks like, I have made a successful login at 12:41 CEST / 11:41 BST today (i.e. one minute before this post.)

kbarber in post 130854 said:Tried logging in 09:13BST.I can only see website logins from yourself, no Loader connections. The server logs are pretty low level, long before security/login stuff gets checked, so it seems the attempt is not reaching the website. Is something blocking outbound connections by application, perhaps? I can see Albert's attempts though (thanks). The user agent is easily faked and I can see other people's entries that list half a dozen browser engines in one user agent string! Half a dozen seems about par for the course for Chrome (pretends to be Safari and AppleWebKit, which in turn pretends to still be KHTML, which in turn pretends to be Gecko, which in turn pretends to be the original Mozilla/Netscape).

I vaguely remember at some point I may have had to install an msxml component into Wine. Unfortunately I can’t remember in detail. I am running Wine 5.5 and have no trouble with current SimSig. Gecko is definitely necessary (though my Linux distro ships it along with Wine if requested, no need to install it within the Wine environment). I do seem to have some sort of XML support enabled as well, again shipped with Wine, but again may not be included in Ubuntu’s version.

Continues to defy me. Thanks for all the help so far; if anyone comes up with anything further please let me know. From what Geoff says it's something at my end, but I can't see any settings that would prevent SimSig getting out to the internet. (Though strangely Chromium stopped working today, having been running perfectly up until now... I wonder if it's possible there's a connection? Can't understand why it would only manifest now though.)

I have been playing SimSig in Wine for many years now. I did try hosting in Wine many years ago and that did not work at the time, but otherwise I have not had internet connectivity issues. Maybe you should ask this on the forum of your Linux distro instead? If that is anything else than Ubuntu/Mint or a derivative of those two, you may hit distro-specific things that I don't know of.

Even if I block my IP address from the SimSig server end, it still takes a couple of seconds to get rejected. SimSig Boss Log in to reply |

Oh, I just remembered, a while ago, I upgraded to a newer version of Wine because the older one didn’t talk properly. I think it was a TLS version issue. I am currently running 5.5.

In the midst of a couple of busy weeks so it might be a while before I do much. Quick look got me to IE under WINE, but with no TLS options nor (seemingly) any menu to get me there. Clearly I need to do a bit more digging, but it'll have to wait. Thanks for all the help so far, I'll let you know what I do find. Log in to reply |

Albert in post 131023 said:Are you able to visit any websites in IE under Wine?Maybe we're getting somewhere... thanks Albert. I can get to SimSig - I'm typing this in IE. But to do it I have to go through the Open dialogue, I can't just input the URL in the address bar. And initially I get a blank page with a message that the 'page has moved here', but hovering over the link doesn't show what the URL it links to is. I don't seem to be able to reach anywhere else - whether I use the address bar or the Open dialogue, it just takes me to a completely blank page. It'll have to wait until tomorrow before I do much else... 7 client day, so 12 hours and a 22:00 finish. Just like being a signalman again... Log in to reply |

The unusable address bar and missing tooltip could be a UI problem rather than a connection problem. I guess they are unrelated. What you are reporting otherwise is quite inconsistent. Which Wine version do you use? AJP in games Log in to reply |
