Yup! According to the latest edition of Railway Magazine, 70012 has been written off without a wheel turning in revenue service as a result of being dropped 15 feet to the ground whilst being unloaded at Newport docks on Jan 5th. Apparently, one of the carrying slings on the onboard crane gave way and the loco crashed onto the deck of the ship Belugo Endurance and went through it onto food products in the hold below. And weighing 135 tons, it made a pretty big mash of them too! Thankfully, 70012 was the last of 5 locos being unloaded, but had the other four locos still been onboard, they would most likely have suffered severe damage as well. 70012 is to be returned to the USA for component recovery. A replacement loco is being built, but it remains to be seen whether it will be numbered 70012 or 70013. Looking at the picture, it looked well bent! Ooeerrrr Missus! Glad I wasn't operating the crane - or standing underneath! Log in to reply |

Pics of the result.............. I like the quote from Rail magaine 'it had not been accepted by Freightliner as it had not landed in the UK'. Nope, it landed back in the ships hold! Log in to reply |

Railway Magazine added the quote "adds a whole new meaning to the term "Flying Banana...!!" Loved it! My contribution is "someone didn't half drop a clanger"!! Log in to reply |
