Running Pascal's excellent 1990 TT, 6G08 0311 Toton - Witton booked to go to Curzon St to run round, wrongly routed towards Stechford at Aston Sth Jn and took the signal without querying the route.

I did read the TT data Pascal, but left NS62 in 'Auto' after two up the Grand to Stechford.

Not a good idea at that location. Still you won't make that mistake again. But you've found a sim bug nonetheless which is good news.

I'll certainly be more careful there next time. It's one of those locations where you can get away with it for two or three trains but then one for an alternative route catches you out, or a junction that can be left in auto all night but if you leave it in auto for too long into the start of the morning peak you soon come a cropper. There are many locations on many sims where the auto facility is almost useless for much of the day, maybe good for a couple of trains at most before you have to cancel and stroke an alternative route.

King's Cross (the real box, as well as the sim) has - or at least had - auto buttons for the turnouts at Woolmer and Digswell, either end of the Welwyn viaduct/tunnels. I would have assumed they were useless most of the time because of the mix of fast and slow traffic, but on a visit I watched the signaller stroke the route for a fast train and press the A button even though I could see that the third train was a slow. And, yes, he did pull the A as soon as first train had passed and he could see the route had remained set.

Pretty much standard practice, that, Clive. As soon as the signal clears for the last train taking the route in auto, pull the 'A' button so it won't clear again in readiness to cancel the route when that train has passed and stroke the required alternate route.

You still have to set the routes yourself, except that with route stacking you can set a number of routes in one go and leave the signalling to sort itself out with each passing train while you focus on somewhere that may demand more of your attention, whether that be another part of the area under your control, making a brew, visiting the bathroom, etc.

Plenty, as you still have to do all the spade work of working out the order in which to run trains just as you do normally, and then apply the stacking to let you concentrate elsewhere.

Well there you have it. You still have to do the tedious trivial job of looking up information in a timetable and inputting it into a system, but the real fun of trying to keep track of several things at a time, while also on the phone and dealing with an incident, when you earn your pennies and the blood starts to pump...

Is working a panel normally not still data entry though? At the end of the day route stacking doesn't remove the need to work while doing other things as well, it just reduces tedious workload at locations like Digswell, allowing you to either work a larger area to get your apparent adrenaline fix, or frees up more time to do other things. It also doesn't remove the need to monitor the situation in case train running order changes for instance.

Well it is when everything's running smoothly. What makes it fun is the multi-tasking, the staying controlled under pressure, the need to keep an eye on areas even when the proverbial is hitting the fan, having many irons in the fire. It's precisely that which makes a job that could otherwise quickly become repetitive and mundane (particularly after a few weeks even at the same place) so attractive.

Well there is another thing. And that is the simple joy of carrying out a sequence of actions in precisely the right order at precisely the right time. Like playing a piece of music you've practised or performing a dance. You've worked a mechanical box, you'll know the joy accepting on the bells, offering it on, setting your route, pulling your signals, putting it on line etc. It is just like a dance, and it's exquisitely satisfying. Lovely. And I'm sure a panel can be like that too as you work your way through your hourly timetable. But if you're going to - ah - leave the signalling to sort itself out with each passing train, well then you really might as well just take an early shower.
