For a few reasons I'm curious as to the size of objects on a PSB console, specifically I'm wondering what the dimensions of the tiles and of the buttons are. If anyone in could let me know I'd be appreciative. The train now standing on platform 2, should be on the rails Log in to reply |

I've got a photo of a hand on a panel covering about 5 tiles by 3. So I would say 5 to 6 cm on a side. That feels right from memory.

I fear this is a 'piece of string' question. It varied hugely over the years NX panels were being built (1937 - present). From memory I think a button on a early-60s NX panel would have been around 6 - 8 mm diameter. I believe the WR/Integra 'domino' panels had dominoes that were specified as 50mm square (I'm sure some of the Swindon Panel bods on here will be able to confirm). Some of the lat '80s panels had a much larger button, around 12 - 15mm diameter if memory serves (and they gave a distinct 'click' when pulled or pushed, in contrast to the earlier designs). I suspect recent retrofits will have been different again. All a bit vague I'm afraid...

Then there's the much larger tiles used on the Ely part of Cambridge panel. I'd estimated these from photos as being 8 times the old tiles, so 400 mm, but BPSR says that the dominos are 40mm square and the "M5" tiles used for Ely are 258mm square.

The IRSE would likely have the information on at least some designs... somewhere. And you might need to pay to buy some of their reading material, possibly in the Green Books or the Railway Signalling & Control book(s). It is very good reading material mind, and I'm not saying that just because I'm a Member, but SimSig wouldn't be where it is today without that reading material that I geeked over in my University days. (/reminisce)
