Hi All, Whilst trying to write a mini TT for a steam special from Cleethorpes, I am struggling to run the loco round it's support coach. Obvious place is in Platform 2. 5Zxx arrives and splits. 0Zxx is sent to the buffers, with the intention of signalling it back from shunt signal P97, through Platform 1 to reverse behind P998. However, the loco fouls the track circuit locking the crossover points Normal. Is there another way to perform a run round at Cleethorpes? Log in to reply |

In reality - they would be hauled in or out by a diesel, and go round the Ulceby/Brocklesby/Habrough triangle (which also reverses the steam engine).

How did they do it in the days of the 31s on service trains? Was the layout different- only recall going there once on the Newspaper train from Manchester. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

The stopping locations in P1 & P2 are set back from the buffers (as appears to happen in real life judged by the oil marks), this was to avoid a 1 car DMU being behind the shunt signal. It 'might' be possible to set the incoming train to stop 'far end exact' to position the inbound train, and then shunt the LE forward but this will probably need to be done manually as there is no separate TT location for the head-shunt. For info, the P2 TC lengths from the buffers are 30m/92m/180m, so it should be possible to RR 180m of coaches by a loco less than 30m long. I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either. Log in to reply |

Couple of shots taken at Cleethorpes last week. The second shot was taken from the buffer stops. “In life, there is always someone out there, who won’t like you, for whatever reason, don’t let the insecurities in their lives affect yours.” – Rashida Rowe Log in to reply |

if i'd hung around later yesterday (was parked with the ticket running out) I could have answered this for you. A special was at Cleethorpes and was in fact beyond the platform starter so presumably had to make an unsignalled move back onto the main line - nearly all specials are top and tailed now. A couple of 47s in what is now the fueling road to boot. ~~Wavy lines~~~ Back in the day - I'm not quite old enough to remember the 40's on the Red Bank - Cleethorpes News. The layout there dates from around 1985 and hasn't changed much since. The last loco hauled trains where 31s in from Manchester and I think during the summer Wigan which ceased c. 1988. This was usually an Immingham 31 with 5x corridor mk 2s. These used to come in on one of the now out of use Northern Platforms 4/5. A Class 08 used to sit inbetween platforms 1 and 2 at Grimsby on the now lifted siding to shunt release the stock. Until 1993 there was triangle at Marsh jn for turning round any steam locos. HSTs ran until 1993 and would sit in the long headshunt close to Suggits Lane inbetween services. I have never seen P97 used for any reason although it's possible the steam special that came in at 6 am yesterday (I didn't get out of the nightclub til 3 so there was no way I was going to watch) may have used it. Again, it wouldn't surprise me if it had been a shed on the back and the kettle was dragged in backwards. There is just enough room for one loco inbetween P97 and the buffers. Log in to reply |

The kettle was dragged in from Barnetby. The 60 charter had a shed on the rear.

No reason (in reality) why a train couldn't be run round in P2 though, assuming the crossover in question's not since been taken out of use! Probably not so handy for a longer train though, which would obviously have to stop short of the crossover rather than running right up to the stops. Note also the additional signalling beyond the platforms, which would appear to be quite convenient in allowing a loco to run round without affecting movements to/from the higher numbered platforms.

I can recall seeing a 31-hauled Liverpool-Cleethorpes service arriving on P2 and running round its train using the crossover. I can't give you a date, but I'm fairly sure it was post-resignalling - the signal protecting the crossover was definitely a position light, not a disc.
