I've been playing the international territories for SIMSIG, is there a way to communicate with moving trains via radio instead of waiting for the driver to phone you?

Ee, folk these days don't know they're born. When I were a little dinosaur hatchling it wasn't even the norm (away from the West Coast Main Line, at any rate) to have Signal Post Telephones. If a train was held at a signal the fireman (later secondman) had to walk to the signalbox. After waiting two minutes in clear weather but immediately in fog or falling snow. (At Biggleswade, the up fast home was a 3-aspect colour light about 1/2 mile in rear of the box. Many a time did I see a hapless secondman trudge half the distance before the signal was cleared, whereupon a blast on the horn told him he could stop walking and wait for the train to reach him.) If a bobby wanted to speak to the driver, he had first to stop the train at the signal in rear of the box then, having cleared the signal, hold a red handsignal out of the window to stop the train. Love stories like these! When I started driving we still got out to use SPT's but I only did it a handful of times before the GSM-R was brought in. Just wait until all the signals are gone... that will be a new era for SIMSIG! Log in to reply |
