Diverting between Hanslope Junction and Hillmorton Junction question 11/04/2023 at 13:55 #151146

I've been playing one of the Rugby Centre timetables and for some reason which I don't understand, a set of actions is occurring that according to the manual should not be happening.

Basically in the early hours of the morning so about 98% of the traffic is freight, I thought I try out the diversion below so I set the route for a pair of Class 4 freights running non stop between the two junctions to run via Weedon vice Northampton in both the Up and Down directions however both times, I get the driver calling up saying wrong route set and asking if I wanted the train to not use the passing points on the via Northampton route.

Now the manual says:

Diversions
Trains booked non-stop between Hanslope Junction and Hillmorton Junction may be routed via either Weedon or Northampton without a score penalty, and without drivers challenging the route. However, note that the Northampton route is much slower (and 2 miles longer) and will cause a time penalty to trains booked faster than 75mph (the Weedon line is signalled to 125mph (EPS) through much of its route).

Sending a slow train via Weedon is likely to severely impact any expresses approaching from behind.

So if the train isn't booked to stop anywhere on the Northampton route than why would a driver call up saying wrong route set and waste time calling up about it?

Does the above only apply to passenger services?
