BBC News item, with some nice archive footage.

Rail magazine reported this a month ago. Typical BBC, on the ball as usual. The cynic in me says they must have been short of news that day!

It's just coming back from Fort William on the empties, somewhow the trains got out of sync and needed an extra southbound run so it has had a trip to FW too.

You just can't beat a bit of clag, especially when it's coming from a couple of Napier Deltic engines. She came through Tonbridge a few years ago while I was on a PNB. Was worth breaking the PN for to watch her come through from a standing start outside where a wrong route had been taken.

And certainly less than the 420MW on-site power station that supplies the Alcan smelters (although in fairness the plant now burns biomass as well as coal and Alcan are also investing in wind-power in the area).

I thought the smelting plant at Fort William was hydro-electric powered, with a reservoir on the slopes of Ben Nevis.

It is, but the plant at Lynemouth where RSG did most of it's work was built on top of one of the biggest deep coal mines in Northumberland with a direct conveyor belt feed from the pit to the power station. At the latter end of the pit's life, they were working several miles out from the coast under the North Sea.
