Next year I will be undertaking work experience through my school. I have been thinking about what I want to do for this and I would like something involving on-train work. I have written to Arriva Trains Wales and they have said that they will most probably be able to offer me a place. First Great Western would be the only other company I would be able to have work experience with in terms of where I live. Just thought I would ask if anyone had any suggestions to which company would be best to go with or if anyone knows what's likely to be involved.

Many Thanks, Eden

Arriva trains wales offered me a work experience placement based at the gate-line at Chester for one week, and a week of shadowing a guard (commercial duties only) unfortunately they got back to me two weeks after the placement. My advice get it sorted early and get a letter of confirmation.

Don't expect to get any safety critical duties, so now cab rides, guarding (door work ect) Or station dispatch duties.

Out of interest where abouts do you live?

If you need anymore help let me know.

"Passengers for New Lane, should be seated in the rear coach of the train " - Opinions are my own and not those of my employer

Thanks for your quick responses. I live in Pembrokeshire with my nearest train station being Clunderwen.

I may take this idea up myself, going into work experience next February, possibilities for me are South West Trains, Cross Country or First Great Western. If anyones had any experience before, could they advise me about which one would be best?

I did some work experience a while ago with South Eastern Train Planning - got a visit to London Bridge Box and a HS1 cab ride out of it! I've also done some with Balfour Beatty. Unfortunately, those were done by who you know, every request to HR got met with a blank wall.
