I got a new laptop yesterday, and I was wondering if it would be possible to be able to download a compressed folder of all the SimSig installations. Say, a ZIP, or a Tarball archive? since Simsig installation doesn't put anything in the registry then, I would expect, you should be able to just need to install the system files and then you could zip up all of the folders with the sims, timetables & even save games from your old pc & extract onto the new laptop

All the downloads are compressed anyway so the only benefit would be the act of downloading a single file instead of several smaller files. However, that file could be quite large once all the simulations are included.

Large it may be but with the widespread use of broadband now it might be nice to have an all in one program - Maybe even a new frontend for all the sims where you can launch any sim/timetable/save out of one program. In this program could be a download section which scans the server for new files and you can download the ones you like, be they new or updated sims, timetables or other files. This syle of system has recently been used very effectively in OpenTTD (im sure many of you will know of it) and i could see it working for SimSig Log in to reply |

While it would be nice, it is a lot of coding/database/UI work, in Delphi, PHP, MySQL, and HTML. I'd rather get some more sims (re)issued first.

Not sure what you can put together. Any sort of Simsig launcher/updater would have to be integrated into the Simsig core code in some form (I wouldn't put my hopes on being allowed to put someone else's code in there!), whilst the backend fileserver would have to be somewhere where Geoff can access it (either SimSig.co.uk or elsewhere, and presumably not open to the public). There'd also need to be some sort of system for submitting files (TTs) for upload to said server, supposedly integrated with the forum/SimSig website.

A fairly basic launcher program should be able to run independant of the SimSig code. That is without the download functions of course

Have you considered just putting an SVN up which downloads all the relevant files to your SimSig directory? Might be easier than trying to integrate it into the core code.

Sorry to say that I don't think this idea is very good. I like the current way of directly loading the simulation(s) via the Start Menu or even directly from my Desktop and I don't want to start up some special launcher to then launch a simulation from that. I've also got a USB memory stick lying around (a mere 256mb!) and I've got all the simulations I've downloaded copied over to that and saved as compressed (.zip) files in-case my hard drive does suddenly fail, so I wouldn't have to cause a drain (no pun intended, but what the heck may one out of it! :P) on the download quota here by re-downloading all the simulations again. And as Geoff has already said..... GeoffM said: that file could be quite large once all the simulations are included. Just my thoughts, anyway. I think people have got the wrong end of the stick. The launcher would not contain the sims. You already have the sims installed or in a folder. The launcher, at first run, would scan your computer for the SimSig executable files, and display them in a list. You then select the sim, and click Play, and it launches the Sim as if you've clicked a shortcut. It may also be possible to scan the server, with Geoff's permission, for new or updated sims, and prompt you to download it. Of course this is still in planning, and I could create an alpha version, excluding the server scan, to give you a preview of the finished product. This wouldn't take long, perhaps a day's worth of coding. I wouldn't need to include any C++, Pascal, HTML, SQL coding. A program such as the one above could be created using VB.NET, in which I have good knowledge. (Formerly known as manadude2) Log in to reply |
