Hmm doubt I will be signing this in my opinion. I would rather see where I am (one thing I enjoy travelling for) and there are many people that have a phobia on going underground, especially after the certain event 4 years ago.

Engineering would take forever too, it's long enough as it is doing the LT network having to send trains at certain points and send them to the point of engineering and by the time you started you'd need more than a weekend to finish it. Look how long it takes to do the Circle line, it's always shut!

To establish a national underground network in major cities across the UK which would in the long-run eliminate congestion on the roads and increase mobility. It would be faster and easier to catch the underground from say a station in London to Birmingham or Cambridge. An expensive project but potentially has very beneficial long-term consequences. The Government should review modernising our transport system and create a UK underground network in major UK cities- not only will less cars be on the roads, but also will encourage use of public transport.

Finally somthing sensible-ish for Cambridge unlike the guided bus,also does it mean that there will be a underground network linking London and Cambridge/Birmingham or will it be a seprate network for each city?edit:What about tram networks instead or even tram-trains.

I'd also assume if there was one even from London to the Midlands, there would be thousands of fire escapse shafts/stairs or a rather long service tunnel right the way through? That would cost even more in it's own right

Oh come now, it's not always shut in its entirety. We carefully select certain parts each weekend that normally marry up with the best alternative routes also being shut

I read this as being each city having its own system rather than having cities linked by underground railways. We already link cities perfectly well above ground. Underground links would take years to build, cost untold billions, and would never offer the speed, comfort and quality of journey that lines above ground offer.

So many cities that have already "started" decent above-ground projects which achieve the same goal. Why look to expensive under-ground projects - especially if there is still space above.

Hold on...the highest speed limit on most parts of LU (excluding Metropolitan Line) is, what, 45mph...the speed limit on motorways is 70mph.......... :blink:

And most cars travel at atleast 80mph anyway.

Maybe they're thinking more along the lines of the RER in France ?. I believe that goes underground for at least part of its journey out of Paris but is not really an Underground Railway like London has. It goes out further than the Metro though.

But Paris needs the RER largely because the Metro doesn't go out very far, compared to LU. The RER is comparable to an S-Bahn: the nearest UK equivalents would be the Newcastle Metro or the Merseyrail system.

Or Thameslink (and Crossrail once it's built).
Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.
