Don't think the indicator in the left hand column has ever worked where the display includes the list of sub-sections - you have to get the magnifying glass out and scan the small icons in the listing of sub-sections to see if there are any new posts.

Haven't noticed the problem you describe, unless I'm misunderstanding it or something, however what I have noticed is if there is a thread with 2 pages or more and it has new posts in it on the second page and you view the first page (with no new posts), when you go to the second page none of the new posts are marked as new..even though they are.
