From memory they are deicer trains, they have brushes on them that basically coat the juice rails in deicer.

Steve McSherry or UKTM probably could tell you more.

They are normal passenger trains, which have de-icing equipment fitted. The brushes are used to sweep ice, and a nozzle is used to spray the fluid.
Certain train paths are allocated as being required as "De-icing" trains, and generally what this gives (particularly on a line like the Met) is an even allocation of trains carrying out de-icing over the whole line / all branches. It also means you have a few equipped trains out-stabled at various sidings overnight - this helps with early morning de-icing should the need arise.

The "sleets" are run dependant on the weather forecast - and there a several "tactical" ways in which we deal with keeping things moving. They range from running trains with the "de-icing" switched on from, say 1900hrs until end of traffic, or running additional "sleet trains" overnight if there is a severe risk from freezing conditions.

Years ago we did have a fleet of "sleet" locomotives built for the task, instead of having passenger trains equipped, but they no longer exist.

I believe that Sarah Siddons and Thomas Lord were mainly used for engineering such as pulling ballast wagons.

When steam finished on the Met they fitted de-icing boxes into the power rails and the fluid was spread by the shoes.
