Hurrah! There is an Industrial Estate nearby. This bridge caused problem accessing it, for taller vehicles. Hopefully, no longer a problem.

I wonder if there was any opposition to the replacement? Someone somewhere would have liked the old knackered one and wanted it to stay

No-one will object to Cow Lane bridge(s) being replaced in Reading, they were a pain for road users and were a constant problem to the railway due to "bridge-bashes" (experienced enough of them myself at work :angry: ). Incidentally I spoke to the project manager on our side and he informed me, that despite a 24 hour late start, the possession was handed back 12 minutes early, fantastic work all round :cheer: When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Well at last yours ran to time Dibbs Ref Woodseats Rd Sheffield (in SimSig terms the one at the top of Heeley loop) 7 years arguing over who's footing the bill - Council or Failtrack/Notwork Rail (or whatever its called this week :whistle: ) 2200 24/12/11 - 0600 28/12/11 booked to replace bridge 2200 24/12/11 - ???? 15/01/12 to fit a Baily type temporay bridge ???? years arguing over completion of the project (rumours abound from the end of the month [pinch of salt] upto2 years [more likely]) Passed the age to be doing 'Spoon Feeding' !!! I just finished watching BBC's Panorama "Are we being take for a ride" and saw that they featured Reading in it - and showed part of the timelapse. :huh:

That's an interesting video, makes for interesting viewing as you get to see the 'innards' of the bridge that you don't usually get to see (such as those dark-coloured blocks they put in between the bridge and the soil). I really didn't get the point of BBC Panorama featuring snippets of that clip on their sensationalist show. They did it as if there was something wrong with replacing the bridge...do they not realise the benefits of it's replacement? Clearly not, I doubt they even did any sort of research into it or asked an expert such as Christian Wolmar. In-case anyone doesn't realise the main benefit...when anything on the road strikes the bridge, you absolutely have to stop trains running over the bridge until it can be checked to ensure it is still structurally sound. If you don't, and it isn't structurally sound, then you could end up with an absolute disaster on your hands (derailment...injuries...potentially worse...). One single bridge strike, no matter how minor it was, can cause hours of delays to trains...which in turn costs money...so it really is a massive benefit to replacing it with a far better bridge overall. For info those 'dark-coloured' blocks are porous concrete blocks to form a drainage layer/path behind the bridge abutments to reduce (pore-) water pressure on them. Can also be a gravel infill, just depends on relative construction costs. I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either. Log in to reply |

Having walked and driven under (and driven many trains over) this bridge, it has been interesting to see its development from one of the worse bridges in Reading to one of the best. For anyone who has walked over the existing bridge between the station and the car park at Reading, you may have noticed a funny-shaped box attached to the window with four large suckers. I believe that this is another time lapse camera trained onto the area where the work is currently taking place to install the four new platforms. If it is then I can't wait for the video, as it has been there since well into last year, and the work is at a very advanced stage now. At the moment you can see down into the old underpass, as they are currently excavating that area for foundation work. Log in to reply |
